hi all
As well as my green stag I now also have a very run down looking Triumph Toledo which turned up last week.
Its a 1971 white four door. Ive been going over it and the body needs a lot of work as I feared it would, bottom of all the doors need work and I think all the front panels need replacing. The central shell looks good though - no rust in the floors etc Also on at least one side where the front inner panel meets the sub-frame there's rust in there as well - so quite a lot of panel beating to be done at some stage.
immediate priority is to get it running so it can be moved.
The motor looks in good shape and need a radiator and a freshen up
The brakes look terrible - discs are shot. Can the Toledo take the uprated discs and pads that Rimmers supply for the dolly sprint?? At some point I want to do a bit motor sport in it so if they are to be upgraded - now would be the time.
Ill look at the back brakes to night but I would think the pads at the very least need to be replaced.
You'll see the pictures of it on my other stag thread.
Also I have to reassemble the ignition and get a key for it from the local locksmith hopefully. I usually look at the rimmers parts maps to see how such things fit together but cant find one for the Toledo ignition
A friend is wrecking a Toledo so hopefully I will be able to get a lot of panels and other stuff from his car. At one stage I was thinking of swapping the shell but have concluded my car isn't bad enough to warrant that.
I'm looking to upsec this car to some extent although I'll probably stick with the 1500, any thoughts on performance mods or enhancements would be appreciated.
cheers
Alastair

Nice save. Wellington certainly isn't kind to British steel. I learnt to drive in the original fwd 1300. Wish I'd kept it now.

Yes it proving to be a learning curve saving this one. Parts aren't quite so easy to come by as they are for the stag. And the amount of bodywork required is quite daunting however just focusing on getting it mobile now, worry about the rest later. I do know where there is a Triumph 1300 stashed away if you are after one.

Thanks, but I'm in Tassie now, where Triumphs are a damn sight harder to come by.

There's a tidy Toledo on TM right now. Neat little cars. I'd love a two door one with sprint running gear.

You don't need any more cars Alex. Neither do I but it doesn't stop me from looking.

Had a bit more of a tinker with the toledo in the weekend, gave the roof a good clean with a combination of different cleanersa and some old t-cut polish. Managed to get rid of the lichen stains and even got a bit of a shine on it. Locksmith has told me that if I can provide the drivers door lock then he can make a key based on that - so duely took the door apart and got got the lock out ok - the door cars are pretty securely held on to the doors - more so than on the stag. You''ll also see fro the pictures how much rust in this door - bit of a worry really, and all the other doors are in similar shape. I'll have to do some thinking about how I'm going to tackle the rust, maybe do some welding myself or get it sorted stage by stage. Will have to think about that

Was about to launch into the restoration of my Toledo when over the holiday I came across this toledo which has virtually no rust that I could find. I wonder if I would be better off spending time on getting this green car roadworthy rather tackling the mountain of work involved in restoring my white car - or may be making one good car out of the two. The green car looks in really good shape and it is stored in the dry, the interior has been dismantled, also rego is on hold which will make life easier. something to think about

Not sure what the panel availability is like where you are but if the front wings are OK on the green car it might be worth having it just for them. Whats the roof and bonnet like after having stuff piled on top ?

Yes got an email back from the owner this morning and he wants $1500 for it minus the engine and gearbox but with the registration on hold. So the scenario would be making two cars out of one which would mean using the white cars mechanical s in the green car shell and would mean ditching most of the white car. The only problem with this is that I still think the white car is too good to scrap (it is fairly marginal I will admit) but by the time I get welding equipment, replacement panels, etc etc etc ...... getting the green car is the easy option. Will have to think about it.

You don't need any more cars Alex. Neither do I but it doesn't stop me from looking. You have more self control than me, i keep looking for bits i think i need, why else would i have a parts avenger van & haven't got the other one yet. AND it's almost too good to wreck!

Since last I posted on here I have been focusing getting the Toledo running – haven’t got there yet, but now that I have had the fuel tank cleaned out I think I should be able to get the motor running soon. I had tried to get t to the point where I could move it (under its own power) but have run into issues with the master clutch cylinder and bleeding the system etc (I’m told the best way to do this to remove the slave and somehow hang it above the clutch master cylinder then once it all bled put it back where it belongs.) Any way the other development is that a local guy with a Toledo is selling his car and I am going to buy it (subject to price). This Toledo is the sme spec and same colour as mine and even runs and importantly has the rego on hold. I will strip my car for parts and then the shell will go to the wreckers. I would have liked to have saved it but there was just too much rust in it to make it worth while – ( I found even more when cleaning out the boot/cleaning out the fuel tank – quite a few small holes) would have been different it had been some super obscure thing but Toledo’s (as I now know) are reasonably easy to come by out here if you know where to look. As much as I would have liked to have bought a welder and got into the panel work, it’s a bit hard to justify when you can get a rust free example for the same money as the replacement panels would cost. So once I have finalised things with the guy selling the other Toledo I will start stripping anything of any value out of my current car. For now I’ll see if I can get the motor running just for the hell of it – before the strip down begins. A few things I aim to do the new car will be all the usual things to get these cars running a bit better Minilites and 175 tyres Slightly lowered springs (prob replace all the bushes as well) Front anti roll bar 1850 axle/diff 1.5 SU’s or equivalent set up Maybe a better camshaft Spitfire rev counter and smiths fuel gauge and temp/oil temp gauge Gearbox with an overdrive
Basically just take it up a level whilst retaining the same motor etc.

I haven't forgotten the green car - i might put the bits out of my car in to that car! Or would that be a Toledo too far?

I’m nearly at the point where I can put the engine in – yay.
My strategy is to drop the engine and using all the standard gear to see if it will run and what sort of shape the engine is in. If its good I will get it to a point where it will run and this will allow it to be run and moved around under its own power. If the engine is shot –I will start looking for a Toyota Altessa engine. So lets hope that its all ok!
I got several quotes for painting the car – they were astronomical ! So will have to do a bit of thinking about how I deal with the body work. There are a few bits of rust that I'm thinking I might get a professional body guy to deal with but I'm wondering if I might paint the car myself – lots of vids on you tube as how to do it, doesn’t look that difficult and I’m only looking to get it good enough to get through certification.
Any thoughts on this ?
I have a friend who is a panel beater and works on classic cars and he says he is happy for me to do the work in his shop – so that sounds promising.
