Wow, just imagining the angle through the cabin the round had to come in at to get where it did... I didn't realise the gearbox was smack in the middle.. I bet that would have given someone a fright if it was being driven!
Do you know what calibre the round was?

Excellent work sir, a true engineer! A few years ago I had the priviledge of visiting a workshop that rebuilt Merlin and Griffon engines; it is truly amazing how much fine engineering goes into something that may only last two or three hours use. Such is war....

Good work as ever Mr JB but obviously a grinder would’ve got it done in half the time 😂 😂 😂

Time for a bit of an update. Panther gearbox now fully assembled, ready to be installed. No oil leaks 😊 Unless you really know where to look, the repair is not obvious 😎 I was looking at the Panther gearbox on display at the Tank Museum the other day, helluva lump isn’t it? Their output splines look considerably more worn than on your example from what I can see.

This one ran very little as it was introduced towards the end of the war. It looks like it might have donated parts to others, as everything like track, sprockets etc were totally shagged. The gearbox, apart from munitions damage was like new. Most parts still had rubber stamped numbers on them...So probably gave problems from the beginning, so they used it for spares to keep other ones going. There were issues with 3rd gear and the triple plate clutch that would have made it pretty much undriveable.

Remachined flywheels, pressure plates and had new clutches made. All good 😊

End of war production? Well I'm surprised it didn't have plywood gears...

End of war production? Well I'm surprised it didn't have plywood gears... plywood? Luxury....Could only be stronger than the reduction box gears that were made out of Cheese. Ementaal at best...🤣 These reduction gearboxes originally were designed to use epicyclic gears. Ideal for wartime production ,being both cheap and easy to machine...not 🙄 So in their infinite wisdom they cobbled up some module 13 gears to fit the gearbox,to reduce costs. They were rubbish. So what did they do? Put guidelines in the drivers manual stating how you need to drive it to avoid stripping the gears. Sure that page was the first page used to wipe up the brown stuff when you found yourself getting ten shades of shyte shot out of you.... It’s not unheard of to kill a set of gears in less than 100km. Again, something that we have replaced

...and for those wanting to know, you can buy a new ,small, German car for what it cost to make that gear set....😳
