Some of you might know that Dayinsure no longer insure pre-93 cars (boo!) I went through the AA but it cost me £18-odd which is almost double what Dayinsure used to charge. Well, I managed to get insured on a Mk2 Golf GTi for a tenner! Just like old days. It's through eCar Insurance. Pretty easy to use, you get asked more questions than Dayinsure used to but they insure retros and it's cheap. You need to be over 25 I think, but as far as I can tell that's the only stipulation. Just thought I'd share as I know a lot of you guys shift retros around and about the country. Click

Not sure AK. I think there's a question about mods on the eCar quote page. Dunno if it affects the premium. I know that Dayinsure (when they did retros) wouldn't insure modded cars - they had to be bone-stock.

You could always test it and see, without buying the insurance. If you find yourself really bored that is!

Damnations, for old bug gers only If i need to insure a shed for a day now it's 25ish quid. Which is annoying, and generally wibblepoo. *makes note to throw some molotovs at any random insurance company*

Sorry to go off topic slightly...
But can you get insurance for a day and use that to get tax with?
I would like to take the 205 out, but I don't want to insure it for 3, 6 months or a year.

No. But if you get month's insurance IIRC you can get tax. The PO are always pissy if they see the insurance certificate has been printed out at home, but a local DVLA office are usually fine.

In my experience - Tempcover's site catagorically states you CAN insure a car with a temporary policy, however long but I have not tried to do that, yet. However, I re-taxed the Jeep, which is covered on a temporary policy (with one day left when I taxed it) no issue, even the lady behind the counter says it was fine HIC can do short-term policies for modified vehicles. I covered the Stag for a few weeks (nonstandard engine/exhaust/etc) for 130 quid, 9 quid a day. I've used Tempcover several times, very good service from them seemingly and no faults or issues (well, never had to claim ..... ) You can be under 25 for both as well (which is handy for me )

It would be nice if you could buy tax by the month, week or day. A shame that the "only way" to get rid of it altogether is to throw ourselves on the mercy of ANPR & black-box trackers.
I used that tempcover biz the other day when I gave the OVLOV some exercise, seemed an easier process than the dayinsure one anyway. Anyone know how these firms are in the event of something going wrong. Dayinsure were pretty OK when it came to the crunch ( Ask Russell how loud that crunch was!!! ;D)

I work at a licence issuing Post Office and the rules are that as long as the insurance covers the day the licence commences or the day you're taxing it if that's later then you're fine.
We're only supposed to accept an original Certificate of Motor Insurance/Cover Note ( ie we can get in deep curse word if you're caught accepting a copy), which is daft considering some internet companies just let you print one/fax you one. Don't hate the PO, we're only doing as we're told. You'd be surprised how much grief we get from customers just because they haven't brought the right documents as stated on their reminder, we don't want to let some dodgy geezer tax his car without insurance then go ram into a lovely uber-rare classic and flee scot free, plus they'll trace who issued the tax.
Whether you get away with a fax or photocopy depends on the person assisting you, and I can't speak for DVLA offices as I don't know if they can be more loose with things.

Not having a go at the PO. Just saying they're pissy about certificates being printed out/faxed, which they are. Tis all.

That's interesting. I'm sure I remember Dayinsure saying that their temp policies are no good to tax your car. That said, my bro Street used a temp policy cover note to tax his car a while back. I don't hate the PO, in fact it's pretty maddening that so many of them are being closed. I regularly bring the wrong documents, and every time I have to tax my car I have stuff everywhere trying to find my paperwork! You'd think I'd learn by now. I think the people that fly into a rage because they've got the wrong docs are probably the same uptight a-holes who give other service workers grief.
