Call me mad, but is this feasible?
The BMW m57 3.0 I6 TDI made it into Range rovers and Landies and has been fitted into the RRC onto the ZF autobox which is not dissimilar if not the same as the one fitted into the XJ40, if my memory serves me correctly. What i'd like to ask before I even think about it, is if it happens to be doable? Just in case there is something i've overlooked. I loved my XJ40, but not the 16-18mpg. I'd like to slot one into an XJ but would like to double check details before i go out buying things.
Thanks!

Which XJ40 did you have?
My XJ40 XJR 4.0 could do around 20MPG around town but closer to 30 on a motorway run. The 2.9s were horrendous on fuel in comparison ; yes the engines were smaller but they were underpowered for the car. It seemed "my" E32 730i was no different here ; While a lovely runner than car drank fuel! It would only get around 20MPG even when driven carefully ; Driving gently didn't make alot of difference.
Even the modern M3 can crack 30MPG on an over 70MPH motorway run and that is on 6 throttle bodies from the factory...
I'd consder LPG first over a derv swap ; the Jaguar engine is also slanted remember and probably alot lighter than a BMW Derv given the AJ6 being of alloy construction.

BMW derv is also alloy if you get the TU2 variant, which is 05 on.
there's one on this very forum in a Granada.
XJ40 would be a 4 speed box, BMW used 5's if not 6 speed on the M57, I don't think that will be an issue at all, but you will need some way to control the thing as they are electronic, I doubt the XJ40's box is?

I "think" the later XJ40 'boxes were, albeit with electrics to assist the mechanical autobox. He could always go to a manual... I was thinking he was going for the earlier lump, cost and all of those things .

The '40 i had was the 4.0 Sovereign. It was fantastic but everything expensive broke and it was going rusty beyond my abilities (and i do classic bodywork for a living!). Would love another.
Thanks for help so far, always appreciated.

It can be done, but if you want to keep the jag autobox the donor car needs to be manual. Merc OM606 is far simpler to do if you want to diesel it.

My 2009 BMW 325d has the M57TU2 engine with a ZF 6-speedo auto I believe. As 325d it is strangled by the ECU, but a chip has it pushing out 255BHP and 550Nm. I did a 350 mile trip with 1500kg trailer and did 0.75liters/km (31mpg) 😁
