that takes me back.... not the easiest job in the world.... and the tensioner! Re the non charging message, maybe check the plug to the alternator again in case you bent a pin in the connector which may cause it to still charge but not give a signal to the dash.... I can't remember how easy it was to reconnect the alternator when you can hardly see the thing. Did the new alternator clear your trac/abs issue or do you need to clear the charging message first? Now the plug was full of white gunk, i dug a bit out and blasted it with a tin of contact cleaner - could be a good shout. It wasn't easy to get off though! The abs and trac ones are gone - the only one is the battery one. I have an OBDII bluetooth reader so I might see if I can clear the code later.

Well my cheapo obd2 reader does everything apart from talk to the ecu. So it's now talking to the bottom of the wheelie bin.

Took a little vid of the exhaust too. Couldn't rev over 3k as they have a limiter in P to protect the gearbox. Nanny state! Sounds cool though - might need some bassy speakers to cut out the supercharger whine! A good result indeed! I wouldn't moan too much about the gearbox cut out. I only wish my Stag with a ZF4HP22 conversion had one! Yup, a specialist I took it to revved the hell out of it in N. I'll be honest, it's part of the reason I sold the car ; it was on a recon 'box when I took it to him to add insult to injury. The ZF 4 speeds aren't meant to be revved over 2.5k due to a design fault, albeit they were miles more efficient than what was before them. Ohhhh yes......! I like that noise. Dunno about the stray "not charging" message. Dodgy connection/earth somewhere perhaps - could take some finding. Nick PS. Just a thought - does it have one of those smart alternators (like Focus and some other Fords) which have to have a (calcium or silver battery) to work properly? The Smart alternators will still work with a normal battery but the battery won't last very long in the long term and neither will the alternator as a result of that. As you said I'd be looking at an iffy earth which could be one reason why it died as well as the multiplug connector.

The same with the 2000's Mercedes, if the battery has even an inkling of getting drained, everything electronic just kicks off.
How much are these worth nowadays? I've never had a V8.
There is a fella on Teehey Lane in Bebington who has an XJR, and an XK and a Rover P5 Coupe, and probably a few more Jags round the back.

Completed listings on our fave online auction site is a useful way to go. My last 3 cars have been V8s! Lincoln: 190bhp XJ8: 300bhp XJR: 386bhp I think there's a pattern emerging!

I hope for your sake it isn't the alternator. I'd be lying if I said I or friends haven't found pattern alternators to be hit or miss. jimbo200sx will recall this with his first 106. If it is at least you can get reasonable brands outside of Jaguar. On one of my cars I didn't have that choice ; ECP were pricier than Ford or the same price with discount! The car was a 2005 Ford Mondeo 3.0 V6 with a SmartCharge alternator. That could have been expensive! If you Google for RTX alternators they don't have the best of rep, and that is without putting in words like bad or faulty into the search

Damn! Didn't even consider googling it. Stupidly presumed a part worth 126 quid would be alright. Wasnt loads more for a better one. I hope Eurocarparts take it back if it is to blame!

RTX are a pet hate of mine absolute shocking and yes I have fitted an rtx alternator to a customers jag xj before and guess what? Yep that battery charging fault that wasnt on before when it had a known faulty alternator was on with the rtx alternotor fitted. The fault with mine was that the light came on and with the jag running it was chargong at 13.8v, the longer it run the lower the charge rate went down. Now I refuse to fit rtx alternators and starter motors

One of my all time favourite cars. I went to the motorshow at the NEC the year the x300 was launched and fell in love with it. A good few years later I was a passenger on a spirited run in a similarly tweaked car. The way such a heavy thing could move and change direction was astonishing to me.

I really want to start using this! I have to walk past its supercharged v8 goodness every day and just want to climb in and burble away! Need to get it 'right' before i use it now that my cars are family cars too. I've detected a light misfire when it's cold, so i need to sort the charging 'issue' (sounds like i need to bin the RTX) and work out what's causing the cold miss, then this big cat's supercharger belt can begin to spin for daily duties...

It happens fella. Many of us have been there and done that, and sometimes even done it again! It's one reason I am quite picky about the cars I buy and the parts I choose now. Yes it costs me a bit but at least it's one less worry. As for doing it again? I did it with my E46 M3. The worst thing? It was with a half decent brand and a motor factor which IMHO should have been better. All I will say is I will never shop at Mister Auto again. What was the saving in the end? It *could* have been £100. I really really considered selling the car after that and I hate to say this on RR, leasing something new and trouble free. theleylandlegends.wordpress.com/category/car-ownership/bmw-e46-m3/2017-ownership/?order=ascMain thing is to keep the chin up, chalk it down to experience and move on .

Love the writeup - I'll have to keep on eye on it! Yeah don't worry; chin is up. It excites me just sat on the driveway; rusty arches, drooping headliner and warning messages non-withstanding. Seems so much more badass than my bloated (but still awesome) x350 XJ8. Sat in it today making whiney superchargery noises to myself. Don't judge me..... 😂 I'll get it sorted as soon as I can... tinkering time is few and far between these days!

Had a spare hour or two today so did a couple of bits. First off, the front plate (although original) was a mess, and the back plate was bigger than the moon. I ordered some pretty sweet legal pressed plates. Font's right, they're reflective... should be ok! I don't know why X308s have such massive black plates, gives the impression it's a smaller car than it is, in my opinion. Anyway... Beforesies: Aftersies:

I've also started to play with the headlining a bit... may or may not be working out, we'll see in the morning! Here's the current state of the headlining: It's £150 for a new headliner, and you have to take one of the screens out to get the board out... didn't fancy any of that! I bought some interior fabric adhesive, a load of 25G needle ends, some cheap UV glue, and a can of MAF cleaner. Chopped the nozzle with a blade so the needle end fitted snuggly, theb applied the UV glue. Wierd stuff - goes off rock hard after 5 seconds of UV light exposure; much easier to work with than superglue. The idea being that I could pierce the material without making a mark, blast glue in, and press it back up! Unfortunately, the first attempt backfired, literally. I hadn't used enough glue and the pressure built up inside the nozzle, causing it to blow off, slopping glue all over the place! Managed to get it off the interior, but it may have marked the headliner! Not quite the idea I had in mind! Anyway, show must go on... I tried again on the other side, and jammed it up with a carboard box and an old cushion. I'll take it off tomorrow and see if I've made it any better. Can't make it much worse!

I also managed to clean the interior properly. I haven't treated the leather at all - but it's all very clean now! Driver's seat is a little worn, but i think I'll be able to dye it so it looks a little nicer. Pics after a sprucing:
