Yes the 'chicken tax' rear seats are cool but perhaps might take a little explaining to insurance companies and your local friendly plod... Can you do a small lift with standard driveshafts etc. Would really add to the look? Nice work James

Lifts are pretty popular in Oz, and they fit hilux sized rims and tyres. As far as I’m aware it isn’t too difficult and consists of installing spacers between the subframes and the body, and extending the steering column and gear linkage, plus brake lines etc.

Well time for an update me feels, I left as it was being dropped off at the painters - I can paint and did paint my last project (an Anglia) but I'm getting old and miserable and really didnt fancy painting it myself. So I found a local guy that was willing to take it on - it was not an easy job as there were lots of dents in the pick up but suffice to say he did a grand job and i'm really pleased. 20170610_113852 by Anglia305e, on Flickr And thats where it stayed for a few weeks - So while i was waiting I had a spare set of wheels so sent the wheels off to be shotblasted and banded, I was recommended a guy in Scarborough and he did a great job - very professional. I went to 6j only because my tyre choice was better and I still wanted it look like a factory model. 20170701_164346 by Anglia305e, on Flickr 20170701_164401 by Anglia305e, on Flickr 20170701_164352 by Anglia305e, on Flickr for comparison 20170701_112906 by Anglia305e, on Flickr While it was away I tackled the A bar - it was a little too wide for my application so needed a cut and shut job. I wasnt too fussed about the bottom bar as that was going to be replaced. I ended up chopping about 6" in width from the A bar. 20171104_092057 by Anglia305e, on Flickr 20171104_094257 by Anglia305e, on Flickr 20171104_102643 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Thats away being stripped and blasted at the moment - then i'll adapt to fit the Brat. I've also had all the pieces made for the roll bar - they just need welding together.

And its painted - yeah - sorry for the small pics (from my crappy phone) IMG_4950 by Anglia305e, on Flickr IMG_4952 by Anglia305e, on Flickr So now the real fun begins - I do enjoy a build up - it seams so to go back together so quickly Rear bed done in U-Pol Raptor with 10% base coat (this is not painted) mv3 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8054657 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8054658 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8054656 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8054655 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8054654 by Anglia305e, on Flickr 20170805_124107 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Its really nice to work on car using genuine panels, the fit is so easy to achieve (so much easier than my Anglia - it took me over 40 hours a side to fit a spurious wing on the Anglia to get it anything like - this was 10 minutes) Now the panels on it was a call to my mate to help me with the decals...

Great, looking good. What vehicle was the A-Bar originally from? I just bought one for a late hilux, it's a lot thicker and will need fettling too.

I'd guess late nineties type. Just looked on ebay and that looked about right so took a punt on it. I'll be replacing the lower bar to make it longer to match the tamiya version.

I little bit of background, Christmas 1984 was given a Tamiya Brat as a present, I always had a liking for a pick up truck, maybe watching Fall Guy had an impression!! Seeing a Tamiya Sand Rover my friend at school had made me want to visit the local model shop and I saw the Ford Ranger - wow I wanted that, sadly due to price I received the Brat - not disappointed one bit,I thought it was cool. I ran that to destruction and this is the actual truck taken around spring/summer time. my brat 1984 2 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Roll on to about 2001 and I the 30 ish me wanted to see if I could buy a Tamiya Brat and thanks to ebay I did - over time i've had loads and still own many including some rare original release versions. The original box art differs to the manual cover box art by Anglia305e, on Flickr brat manual page 2 by Anglia305e, on Flickr And they also show you to apply decals different again in the manual brat manual decal by Anglia305e, on Flickr And this is the picture on the inside cover of the Tamiya build manual brat manual page 1 by Anglia305e, on Flickr and the decal sheet gives you a couple of options. There is a guy on ebay.com based in the US who makes decal kits for the Brat, so I contacted him and sent a few high resolution shots of the original Tamiya decal sheet and also sent these pictures of my model so that he could scale them for me. A few weeks passed and a full size decal kit arrived. P9081408 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P9081411 by Anglia305e, on Flickr So the dilemma, I called my mate to help me fit the decals and we cant decide which way to go....more to follow

So with nothing else to do - lets go for it One big decal kit P8194663 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8194672 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8194677 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8194679 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8194671 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8194674 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8194680 by Anglia305e, on Flickr That looks better :-) very happy bunny, it took us best part of a day to get this done, to repay my mate I did a full machine polish on his partners Audi TT we finished quite late into the evening. The decal kit was a bit of a sod to be honest, as can be seen the stripes are individual and as we had never done out like this before we did struggle a little at times. Suffice to say I'm very happy. Now do I fit the rest of the decals? my mate seams to think I should finish the truck and take pics as is and when the rollbar and A bar done have a think and we can always add them then..

I do this for a living and you guys did a great job!....The only easy part about applying graphics like this is messing up! If you rush the job anywhere, it will show. The guy who did the decals for you also did a very good job...and must have had the right templates. those compound curves are tricky even with properly shaped graphics.
I would agree on finishing the truck, stepping back and seeing what decals to add later. very easy to do it that way, but a bear of a time getting them off fresh paint without issue.
looks great!

JP Yeah, thank you. My mate did all the work I just helped out with the long decals. He does it for a job but did swear a bit during the day. .. know what you mean about applying decals to fresh paint but I don't plan to remove so that would be an issue for the next owner if I sell and if they don't like em. I'm chuffed with it so that's me happy

So latest installment Needed to do a little work to the engine, finish interior and build the bumper up. First job the oil leak - yep that will do it, so new gaskets and that problem appears fixed. 20170429_105715-1 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Then onto the running issue, this truck has never run great but in fairness I only drove it about 3 miles prior to laying it up. Carb off and new gasket set fitted IMG_5419 by Anglia305e, on Flickr IMG_5420 by Anglia305e, on Flickr IMG_5422 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Next job to build the front end up/interior and side mouldings 20170916_154327 by Anglia305e, on Flickr 20170826_145713 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Correct end caps - these have been wired up as the side repeaters 20170826_171109 by Anglia305e, on Flickr The bumper set up is the best compromise I could come up with, Tamiya use a one piece with the side markers, but I couldnt find those (it is an artist drawing after all) The bumper should sit further out on dampers in true US spec with a filler piece added to the chrome bar. I didnt want that look so it's UK style brackets fitted with the US style end caps.. I'm happy with it so that i'll do as they say. Next issue was the side mouldings - on the box art these have a chrome insert, UK ones are solid black, finding and shipping a full set was not an option so I looked down the spurrious aftermarket route and found these gems !!! 20170915_184009 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Quality !! 20170915_184014 by Anglia305e, on Flickr The standard adhesive was terrible so I removed it and used 3M double sided tape to make sure they didnt fall off !! Perfect - well happy 20170916_105142 by Anglia305e, on Flickr 20170916_105155 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Then time for MOT - the observant amonsgt you will nowt a reg swap, thats because I wanted it to look older and not out of place with a chrome bumper. Was only the cost of a transfer fee so I can live with that. Then on for MOT Passed first time with no advisories --- YEAH :-) I still have a slight running issue but more on that in a bit 20171007_092527 by Anglia305e, on Flickr On temp wheels as I couldnt afford the tyres and was keen for the MOT so a friend lent me a set. 20171007_085413 by Anglia305e, on Flickr SO jobs to do - slight running issue (somat to do with the mixture) Fit the chrome rear bumper (make some new brackets) Fit front A bar and rear Roll bar Get some tyres and fit the refurbed wheels Still lots to do but at least I can drive it now

Wanted a Brat as a kid, got a Mardave Apache instead (practical Dad said it was stronger, and he was right, but not nearly as quick!)
I take it this is a keeper?
If you ever want to sell, are we allowed to call "dibs" on this forum?
"Dibs", just in case!!!
