Two suggestions for hoses that work were given to you. Cohline hose or Gates Barricade. You merely chose to ignore both . Excuse me? No, i didnt "choose to ignore both", as i had purchased the fake hose long before i knew it was an issue, or asked about it. I have already replaced the hose in question with far more reliable Codan fuel hose, but i want to spread the word about the fake hose as its still catching people out and its not safe. I still have over a meter of unused fake hose that instead of throwing away I'm using in other, less critical, situations. Ah fair enough. These days I only trust the hose from Cohline, sold by a bloke who sells to many big players in the classic car industry. dickdasterdley is the man to contact here. name some sellers where it can be brought in small amounts Gates Barricade from Moss is fine, but it's not what you'd call a bargain. Some sellers on eBay sell it but again eBay can be full of fakes and do you want to save a few quid to risk your car literally catching fire? Cohline from dickdasterdley is also proven to work. In the VW circles we mix in we've seen various grades of hose failing, be it R6, R7 or R9. It may pass the inspection to be made of those grades but not many will stand the test of time.

This is my concern - it's all very well saying a particular brand name is good, but as soon as there are fake versions around, how do you tell? Steering clear of eBay doesn't help - plenty of sellers on eBay are selling perfectly good stuff, and in fact many of the traditional sellers also have eBay shops.
Same for anything that can be faked - I'm thinking of adding electronic ignition, and thinking of Accuspark. But I hear of them being unreliable sometimes, and then when I push further I hear that there are fake versions out there. How do I know I've got a fake one or a real one?

I've bought the submersible Cohline from AJL Electronics (listed above) and also "normal" Cohline from Merlin Motorsport (direct from their webshop). I know AJL personally, hence trust his source, and he's been selling it for a few years now with no issues being found with it. For my last batch, I didn't need the submersible stuff, so went with Merlin as theirs was cheaper (but the price and the actual product when it arrived suggests it is the genuine stuff), especially as I was buying some other bits from them at the same time.
Not all eBay stuff is fake - just that there's some on there, so go with a seller you trust if taking that route as, at the end of the day, eBay is so easy. Saying that, there was some hose being sold through some Weber distributors that was failing after a year or so but that was a few years ago and was the fabric covered stuff - might be different now.

Interesting, I've had the same problem as well, for years. I started buying Codan fuel line instead. Interestingly my 1990 Carina is still on its factory hose, which is in great shape, which shows the problem is due to dreadful quality rubber rather than the fuel.

Cohline 2240 from Merlin MS is working for me. Had two lots of the unbranded alleged SAE J30 R9 fail within nine months before that

I used to agree but I've seen many people in BMW circles stung with Meyle quality while others are fine. It's a shame it's got this way really but as always a few spoil it for everyone. For this reason I didn't get Osram Nightbreakers for my sister's Saab off ebay; You only have to do a search here to see what 'reputation' they have. Hers have been fine and her cars runs with the lights on most of the time. Sellers I've found decent on eBay and in increasing cases using them more than the usual suspects include the same peeps who have websites elsewhere like Merlin, Demon Thieves etc. include: MLR Motorsport; he's not the cheapest I'd say however DoctorCarParts; they're very good but they do have a website outside of eBay GreenSparkPlugCompany AutoElectricalSupplies; they're based in Kineton but only deal with customers on eBay. There are some folks on them, including one big name where it would take alot for me to shop with them again.

Being in NZ limits my selection of hose brands and sellers a lot, which is why i went out further and got the original, fake, hose from the UK. I would've thought a company called Advanced Fluid Solutions, whose mission statement on their site says this
Would be trustworthy and wouldn't sell rubbish. I was wrong >_< They still list the same dodgy hose i purchased on their website, and never got back to my emails enquiring about the quality and early failure of my hose (I wasnt even accusing them of it being fake, or asking for a refund, just wanted information).
So many cheap knockoff parts for everything these days, its hard to buy "genuine" items without getting it direct from the manufacturer or finding a legit authorised dealer.

This unbranded hose has been around for years! I got stung with it when it first came out- bought 100 metres of it to use on fuel hose assemblies- used it on my own car and it fell apart....never sold any more of it, switched to using Cohline 2134 and never looked back.
Think Ive still got a massive coil of the curse word somewhere

A new year, a new bump. Looks like this rubbish is still being sold on eBay, take care out there and only use reputable brand hose.
Remember, "W = SAE J30 R9" printed on the hose means its cheap Chinese knockoff hose.

I need to source some decent hose, it seems some of the sellers listed don’t seem to have it.
Only seller on eBay that pops up for the cohline or codan is ‘volksbolts’. Reputable seller?

looked at mine during the week , cracked to the point it would fail if twisted
think its going to have to be a regular thing to poke round with a torch and check these often
think of all the non enthusiast that have some fitted by a local garage and are driving around with it about to fail

I pretty sure this is the guy who posted on VZI for years warning of exactly this when fake hose started to become more common. If so I think he is a reputable seller who buys directly from the manufacturer, just from memory.

That’s great. I’ll buy some off him then.
I’m only running derv through it which is much less harsh on hoses so I’ll probly just go for the cheaper codan, it d just rather have the piece of mind as it’s my own vehicle.

Just checked Volksbolts is a called HairyYeti on VZI, here is a thread where he explains his source. Thread worth a read. You can contact them direct via a link in his posts to his FB page. www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=1217618&page=4
