The gelato ice cream freezer should arrive tomorrow, and the window roller blinds are going up tomorrow as well.
Thursday is the coffee machine and grinder arriving (our biggest expense), and Friday is installation of said coffee machine and our first training session on it. The slate tiles for the middle of the basement wall are also due on Friday. Saturday is collection of the carpet for the stairs, plus new coir doormats and edgings.
Other stuff to do... * more tiling on the ground floor and in the toilet * wallpapering around the top over the tiles (in toilet as well) * lots of filler over the electricians holes then smoothing and painting * front of the counter to be fitted (wood planks again I think) * the back door needs to be changed to an outward opening one as a fire exit and there's a push bar to fit * sparky still needs to fit two spotlights downstairs, plus the four dangling down lights in the front window and emergency lighting and smoke detectors to fit * small corner hand wash basin to fit and plumb in * wall hung fire to fit * skirting boards to buy and fit downstairs * large wall art (x3) to be fitted downstairs * flooring to put down downstairs * tables & chairs to buy, as well as cutlery, crockery etc * shelving to put up in service area
....and there's loads more I'm sure I have forgotten. For now...

Fair play for getting off the treadmill! Are there any small local charities around that you could offer the use of your premises one evening a month for their meetings? Its a good way to network ( did i just use that hateful term?) and small charities find it hard to find premises that don’t charge a fortune. They’ll be grateful and reciprocate with good word of mouth praise for you .... and anywhere i can get a cup of decent tea ( builders, milk no sugar,,in a pint mug) and coffee ( instant, milk and 3 sugars) gets my vote!
Good luck!

Loads more pics to get posted. Big progress with tiling, wallpapering, more electrics, ceiling tiles finished, roller blinds fitted, gelato freezer delivered.....etc, etc... Grey grout... I started there papering last night... Ceiling complete and continued on with the papering this morning... Coffee machine arrived this afternoon. Will be installed tomorrow morning, and we start our training on it tomorrow afternoon.... Papering around the service area finished... The sparky came over again today, and wired up the big, old style lights at the window and got the dimmer switch for them sorted... Love those lights. They were one of those details we wanted right from the word go, but they are actually much better in reality than we imagined. Heat detector (rather than a smoke detector) installed upstairs. It'll be linked in wirelessly to the smoke detector in the basement when that's installed..... The last two ceiling spotlights fitted today. All six in now, and dimmable... Did I say I loved these lights?.... The last thing I did today was to start papering around the top of the toilet walls. The lower area will be tiled like the main service area. And before anyone comments, yes, I do agree the toilet looks a bit like a prison cell at the minute. Hopefully, the addition of the white ceramic wall tiles and a plant or two will soften the look LOL Another big day tomorrow, with lots happening, more progress to be made, and some training with the coffee machine. Oh, and my shingles has returned on my left arm. Probably long hours in the shop and lack of sleep due to an over-active mind thinking about things.

Good luck! Good call on suggesting the charities etc. We already know there will be an opportunity to maximise revenue by hiring out the basement as a private function room, but the charity idea is great. I had thought of local book clubs, church committees and the like who might be interested in using it, although the fact that we don';t as yet have an alcohol license might dissuade them. That said, I need to look at the legalities of people bringing in their own booze. I'll have to check if I would need a license or not for that situation. I have a personal alcohol license, but the premises currently doesn't.

Good progress. I don't know the area but have a good look at customer base and how you could attract people to fill any quiet times OAP deal? For me any place like this has to have spotless bogs, friendly staff and nice surroundings the other bits are just add ons. Any competition?

A couple of examples of things that cafe's have done that I have appreciated and then talked about; Don't know if you will allow dogs inside or if you'll have an outside area. A cafe in Withypool on Exmoor, if you have dogs they give you some dog biscuits and have a bowl of water for dogs. I really recommend this cafe if your are exploring Exmoor, the cakes are great and the staff very friendly. A cafe in Bristol (Spicer & Cole), if you have a pot of tea there is an egg timer on the tray that has been started when the water is poured in the pot, tea is brewed when the sand has run out. If you're catering for mums (or dads) after the school run then colouring picture etc would be good (have you seen Motherland on BBC?).

No the ones in the kitchen. Looking at the pictures they are hanging off the wall from the tiling, plus in the one photo you are looking at the one set through the curved glass of a display unit. I think.

No the ones in the kitchen. Good spot. The double socket has just been secured to the tiles today. The initial thought was that it would be lowered under the bench level, or taken off, but a change of heart meant I kept it, but it wasn't worth raising an inch to be level with the four way sockets further along. Hence why it's slightly different.

Funnily enough, we will be allowing dogs in, and we will be dishing out complimentary doggy treats to those that want them. There are a few coffee shops in Saltburn who don't allow them in, and we've had conversations with potential customers who won't/can't go to those establishments. We have ordered the egg timers for the tea too. Our suppliers have it as a requisite on using their products. It means it's always brewed to the right strength, which is important to them and us. Appreciate the ideas. Keep them coming!

For me any place like this has to have spotless bogs, friendly staff and nice surroundings the other bits are just add ons. Any competition? There is competition, some even on the same street, but the thing with Saltburn is that every coffee shop is busy, plenty of people to go around. And it's not just seasonal. It's just a busy town, and on the up. We are thinking of hiring out the basement area for private occasions (baby showers, book club meetings etc). OAP's will get a 10% discount we think. We'll also be running a loyalty scheme of some sort. Don't want it to be similar to the likes of McDonalds with the coffee though.

Interesting that the egg-timers are a pre-requisite, maybe they have the same suppliers. A dog friendly cafe should be a good attraction.
Find or start a knit and natter group, apparently they drink lots of tea. My wife works in a local library and has said this, or story time for pre-school.

On the dog friendly note - do you have space for a "mucky area" where people can wipe the dogs down, since youre near the beach? Perhaps with a handful of old towels? Just thinking it would save a bit of cleaning inside the cafe proper...
