I had an early ( March 76...still got the old log book) Cavalier 1.6GL long long ago. That went as well as any of the multitude of 2.0 ltr Cortinas I ended up owning. Its a bit baffling why someone wouldnt have dropped in the bigger Cav/Opel lump rather than go to the trouble of putting in a 90BHP Pinto engine?? Anyway, great cars, good looking and good to drive!!

You'd have to ask the previous owner as to the why, but it's a nice easy engine to work on and gives the old girl a nice bit of oomph, especially with the larger carb on it now. I've some further plans for the engine but serious attention needs to be paid to the bodywork so that's what I'll concentrate on first with the available beer tokens.

Not updated this for ages. Ran the car about over the Summer and had a few problems with the throttle and clutch cables which required completely redoing using Ford parts to get them functioning properly (it snapped two clutch cables!). I wasn’t overly happy with the Pinto and it’s mounts, etc, so decided to take it out along with the gearbox ready for a new engine to go in. In the meantime as well I’ve had a good look underneath and there are some rust holes to sort out, both sills need redoing where previous repairs have rusted through, and there is a hole in one of the chassis rails that needs plating, oh and the rear valance has a hole that needs patching. So a few jobs to do, chiefly rust repair and fit a new engine, but here’s how she’s currently sitting looking sorry for herself...

Ah another Mk1 owner, i've just seen your thread and welcome. If the chassis rot is the 'swan neck' area then this is triple skinned and needs the engine bed dropping. I know as mine was sorted out 3 years ago. I'm glad too that the pinto has gone, these really are just boat anchors and not the best engine to use. Looking forward to more updates. Bookmarked.

Cheers for the welcome! The hole in the chassis leg near the front is near one of the suspension pick up points, there’s a hole in the leg anyway that seems to have rotted through. Doesn’t look too difficult to fix but need it up on the lift really as I don’t fancy crawling about in the floor to sort it. The new engine will be as equally offensive as the Pinto and weigh a fair whack but will have a few more cylinders for some noisy fun.

Well not a lot has happened at all apart from looking at it every time I go in the garage and thinking “I must start on that”. Although some sills have arrived that I can butcher to cut out the rot and repair the holes left by previous repairs and also a nice shiny fuel tank that I’ll leave you with a photo of...

Very slow progress but the old tank is now out and started stripping the sound deadening to uncover more rusty holes...

Managed to get off the sound deadening I wanted, hateful job that is! Discovered more rust so that all needs cleaning up. Also spent a while yesterday trying to fettle and get my mates Chevette running.

That engine looks interesting - what is it? 1.8 Rover K-Series, VHPD head, forged internals, ITB’s, etc, etc. Was dyno’d at 222bhp s moves the B along nicely.

Looks very nice too. Did you build it yourself then? I’m rebuilding an mgb gt at the moment but the priority for now is to get the bodyshell rust free and then back on the road. Engine mods will hopefully happen sometime though.

Cheers, my Dad and I built it. The B shell was pretty rotten to start with and had most of it replaced and it was originally a V8 but after seeing how the K engined B’s performed on track against the V8’s we swapped out the engine....I say swapped it’s a long process and needed the front cross member and one of the chassis rails modifying to accommodate it.

Bit of wiring fun with the B today, fault finding as to why the lights all went out. Turned out to be a crimped wire behind the oil pressure gauge, all fixed now though and ready for OhSoRetro next weekend.
