A friend is driving a Fiat 500R (uses FIAT 126 engine) from Italy to Norway and has an engine failure in Germany. The rocker arms were probably not adjusted properly and it has now broken the top of one of the pushrods. What procedure should be followed to make the engine fit for purpose again? Is there likely to be more damage? I have very little knowledge about these engines so need some pointers to help him out.

Where in Germany are they? (I have a complete engine in the Netherlands Nijmegen.. .) It is hard to tell if there is more damage...

Yeah, it could have wiped out a cam lobe, damaged a lifter, etc. And there could be metal pieces floating in the oil.
But as a road side bodge, I'd just stick another pushrod in, ( maybe another rocker assembly if I could find it ), change the oil & clean out the filter ( the centrifugal bit on the end of the crankshaft), and drive it home.
These are tough little engines, if you don't over rev or overheat them...
Worst case scenario, if you damage the engine doing that, its still cheaper than having it towed to where you are going...
If it didn't bend a valve, it will probably bring you home...

You should be able to have small parts like that overnighted to you, wherever you are. And there are plenty of Fiat 500/126 experts on the net that would have the parts.
What is the skill level of your friend?
Will he be able to do this?
( the reason I'm asking, that must have been quite the death rattle before it let go. These are not the smoothest engines in the world, but it must have been obvious something wasn't right, for several miles...)

Thanks fiataygo and metalshapes for your input. Luckily they have managed to source a new pushrod from a Garagre 150miles from where they are at i St. Peter Germany. I spoke to Middel Barton Garages yesterday on their behalf and was given the contact details for holtmann&Niedegerke in Germany if the new pushrod doesn't work out. I will also forward this thread to them - fingers crossed

So did they make it home without any more problems?
