I will probably regret this but after 21 years of ownership, I’m considering parting with my rare RHD 1964 sunroof beetle. This was the first year VW fitted a steel sunroof and last year of small windows. I simply don’t use it enough, and with 2 young kids and no rear seat belts it’s not very practical, and for most of the year it’s just a garage ornament. Please note the car was featured in VolksWorld Magazine August last year.
Well known car on the Scottish VW scene. The car has its original unsplit seats and as far as I am concerned provides credibility to the low mileage (68k ish) on the speedo . It has done just 15k fair weather miles since I restored it. The car is solid, rust free, and built to a high standard. It does not have a concourse finish, but everything is detailed underneath and/or waxolyed for use, with stainless steel bolts used where possible. This car was always built to used rather than be an ornament, although sadly that’s what it has become. I know this car inside and out having owned and tinkered with this car since 1995. It has always been garaged in my ownership. I honestly love this car.
When bought in 1995 I gave it a full body off restoration and restored it as a (old school) ‘cal looker’. Well I was young and had lots of spare time! The car had sat for a long time prior to my ownership. The car had rusted at the bottom in the usual places, but it had never been repaired before and the all important sun roof was in good condition. All the rot was removed, and then the shell underside was blasted, to get rid the last areas of rust. I did this all myself, so I know nothing was missed. The shell was painted off the pan inside and out in 2k.
The chassis was also stripped and repaired in the same manner. The framehead was rotten, so was replaced. This meant I could fit the later ball joint front suspension, which was all replaced with new parts including an adjustable beam. The car has numerous mechanical upgrades beneath the stock body, but using all VW parts. Note, I rerouted the drain tubes for the sunroof, to prevent the doorpost rotting again (what a stupid design!). The car has Porsche pattern disks at the front and drums at the rear. All the running gear is post 68 beetle parts. It’s also converted to 12v and runs an alternator and a later gear box.
When I bought the car the engine was missing. It now has a performance 1776cc engine putting out probably 100bhp. The bottom end is a waterboxer conversion by Laurie Petit with a brand new crank. The heads are imported from the US, Gene Berg modified/ported stock VW heads. The engine has match ported manifolds and twin 40 DRLA Delorto carbs. It has a full flow oil system and deep sump. The engine has a stainless vintage speed exhaust. The carbs are set up properly, and the engine runs as sweet as you can get. This engine will happily cruise at speed on the motorway and never get hot, or will dribble along in traffic at idle, without sputtering. It’s a great all rounder, and you won’t a find better set up engine.
The car was lightly used for summer weather from the moment it was finished. I doubt it got rained on more than a dozen times and was never used in the winter. In 2010 I decided to rebuild the 64 in period rally car ‘style’ as a tribute. I raised the front suspension, and pulled the engine to sort a number of annoying oil leaks. The car drives much better than ever before. It handles better than just about any other beetle I’ve owned, its powerful and stops brilliantly, it’s a real driver’s car. I’m looking for serious offers around £9,000. It’s a really well sorted small window beetle, and sunroof ones are very thin on the ground these days. Note, I’m willing to consider reasonable offers. The car really needs nothing, just get in, drive and enjoy. Note it’s not for the faint hearted! I know it’s a clique, but the first person who views will buy it. I live near Edinburgh and a few minutes from a local train station with regular services to Edinburgh, so don’t be put off by distance.
