OK, advice time (again!). Has anyone had any experience of "chipping" cars in the past? I came across this on the 'Bay: pickled gherkinand wondered if any of you guys had any thoughts, comments, experiences? Now, I know there's alot of scammers out there who'll charge you £20 for a resistor that nadgers up your engine, but this seems to be a little different....? I am sceptical about the power output boost though. In RC this month it said you'd be lucky to squeeze another 10bhp out of an iS like mine, and that was including binning the cat (already binned on mine). So, a worthwhile investment, or a waste of time?

The ad looks good but there`s a couple of dodgey feedback there - I suppose it`s only £30 but I`d want to get it on a rolling road to see what difference it`d made

Looks like a genuine ad, but I also read the article in RC this month and I'd to take their advice rather than what's on eBay.

I wouldn't bother, I chipped my Golf and it hardly made any difference. Turbo deisels seem to benefit the most.

is it really worth it for a debatable 25bhp? Personally, i wouldnt take the risk.
equally, tho i love the mag, retro rides isnt 100% always bang on the money. But thats to be expected with them being so much to many different makes and models of vehicle.

Chipping a naturally aspirated engine is very debatable... And I don't really know why a "euro 318iS chip doesn't work in the UK", since they have the same 'Motronic M1.7' engine management.
But thirty pounds are not a lot of money, so you can try it out. But I would suggest taking the car to a rolling road to see if there are any real differences with the BMW and the 'Viper2' chip and if the car runs correctly with the 'Viper2' chip (many 'chips' make the engine run too rich).

I would say for thirty quid you can't really go far wrong. I would echo what PsychoDriver said about the Euro-spec ECU's being the same - why would they change them for the UK market? Don't make any sense! What about installation? Is it a simple piggy-back chip that you can plug in / unplug or would you have to get it specially installed?
Emerald engine management and the like is of course waaay better, and you can have the car set up however you like. It is of course loads more money though!

Hmmm, maybe not such a good deal after reading those links! I guess £30 was a bit too good to be true.

I'm not 100% sure if the guy is dodgy, a lot of people on PassionFord believe so but to be honest it suffers problems with mob mentaility. As with anything it's worth having a quick nosy around the net to gen oneself up a little.

Depends what chip, if it's one of these "wonder cures" that does curse word all but claims to double your power then leave well alone, but if you went for something that was geunuinely an improvement then good on you! Just I don't know much about these things, I've never 'chipped' a car before!

Maybe we'll be giving it a miss then! ;D Oh, and gosh aren't those chappies on PassionFord a bunch of foul-mouthed monsters! Surely that's not gonna help the "chav-tastic" image their motors have if they go on being as rude as that, eve if they are angry! ;D
