So... Earlier this year I decided to stick my 1970 VW up for sale and to move onto a bit of 1950s American steel Picked up off ebay a newly imported 1950 Ford shoebox sedan with a seized flathead v8 and some awesome patina (not to mention some holy floors and some unwanted wildlife living in bits!) Here are a few pics as it arrives, Dez knows the plans and will be doing the welding work for me, and i'll be updating this thread as and when I find time and take pics/anything interesting happens I started stripping it down to make access to the engine easier so it now lacks quite a lot of its front end...

No chops on this i'm afraid, and only spraying that will be done are where the front wings were never body colour due to an ancient front end impact I have been bending out (bodywork damage only) and i guess they replaced the wings and bonnet and left them in some factory coating. So I will be blowing them in body colour and feathering it into the burn marks/desert sandblasting marks in the top sections of the wings, I suppose thats almost fake patina, but i'm not counting it as such lol.
Plans are get the floors replaced, and the sills and the boot floor, and the area around the rear arch lip (those are the only rust parts), get it running and lower the rear end on lowering blocks (it currently has old saggy springs with no blocks, so I have replacements I got from some parts trading with a mate, and bag the front end.
Looks wise it will look like it does now, but running 17" wheels, i keep changing my mind between steel smoothies in anthracite with a chrome lip/beauty rings and original hub caps, and 17" american racing type 5 spokes.
It's gonna have a nose down cal-look/hotrod stance not a kustom taildragger look

yep, plan for now is to get the flathead running even if i have to completely pull the bottom end and unstick the pistons one at a time.... if it's too far gone it will probably be moved on and a Y block will be in the cars future....

Getting it up to 100mph was probably nowhere near as scary as getting it back down to 0mph in a hurry!

well i know it does at least 70 as i have a speeding ticket from 1972 for 70 in a 55 zone in New Mexico haha
I also have a rebuild kit for all the wheel cylinders and the master cylinder and all new brake hoses, so i'll fit new shoes too and machine the surfaces of the drums if they need them.

Not much has really happened since the last pics, few repairs to some sheet metal and some more dismantling and cleaning up of components. Sadly I have to hang it all back together for a short while as the DVLA are coming next week to do a pre registration inspection, so we'll see how that goes or if I need to re-apply once its roadworthy.

So a couple of weeks ago this happened.... all legal and registered, so got some temporary plates on, showplates if you like, to pay tribute to the state it was imported from. More importantly this meant that work could start commencing properly, so this fortnight I have stripped the brakes completely, rebuilt the wheel cylinders and the master cylinder, cleaned everything up and am ready to start filling and bleeding the system as well as re doing the parking brakes. Engine is now ready to be removed and rebuilt with new rings and a few new valves, and I have spoken to Miles at Jackhammer Kustoms regarding a nice sheet metal order to be placed at the start of September, so its not the beginning of the end, rather the end of the beginning has now started.

There was quite a lot of old oily sand which seemed to protect everything from rust... :/ At least I can now get to the zerk/grease nipples on the kingpins, which are actually remarkably free of play and gunky old grease, which is a pleasant surprise. However, the car is now sitting like this: Which just makes everything so easy to access, and I have a set of lowered aerostar springs and shocks for the front (temporariliy till it ends up on air) and new rear leaves with 2 inch lowering blocks to chuck on, as the originals are so saggy they are about 3 inch lower than stock without blocks, and are really uneven and strengthened by random plastic inserts! I say easy.... removing the master cylinder basically involved disconnecting everything brake and clutch linkage related! Happy days
