I feel I should add as a note of caution something that I have ran up against. Apparently, within the last 10 months as that's when my saga has been ongoing, DVLA have changed the rules (!) about stating dates of manufacture - to whit, if your car was imported already, or you are doing it now, and you have an unknown date, as can happen, and the car ends up on a Q plate - well, you have only 12 months from the date of import/first UK registration to get it dated and resubmit your forms to get a transferable/age related plate on, and only the first owner/importer (first UK keeper) can apply for this. If you don't, the Q is on there for life. From the DVLA dept that deals with this. I'm researching it now, I need to. Currently two V5s exist for my car, one KXZ**** and one Q****** and DVLA have both of them... I'm not worried...much...
Oh, and slightly more amusing, in NI we used to have to fill in the V55 for cars we brought over from the mainland. It stopped eventually but I remember having to do a few in 2005/6. Our motoring laws are all entirely devolved so we have a few different procedures than Swansea.

Oh curse word not thought of that I have a 1958 ford f150 arriving in the next day or 2 and only have the manufacturing date on my deportation certificate, where it says reg date it says 12,12,2017.

Ring/email up Ford USA, and request the data that way . dickdasterdley had a similar issue a while ago, and he tried a couple of avenues which did get him a manufacturing date in the end.

Good work. I'm in the situation of, I have the manufacture date, and a dating certificate to prove, but as I'm neither the first owner (in the UK) and it's past a year (many years) since it was first registered in the UK, my submission to get the manufacturing date correctly amended on the V5 has been refused.

Anyone imported a car form Japan that didn't have a registration/de-registration? VAT and Duty has been paid, I have a receipt that it's in the NOVA system. Thanks.

Guys! don't forget about insurance. You don't know when you're going to need a backup. Here's the good company General. It worth at least consulting with. It must be a lot of work trolling forums to promote your company, are you on commission or is it your company? but do allow me to make a suggestion to make your life easier, don't promote American based brokers on a UK forum. lol

It is precisely why I did it . There are a lot of smoke and mirrors about importing being painful. Yes it can be, but then so can a car purchase! I am merely dictating what I was told when I called the DVLA. For me it was a very smooth transaction. That and a few mates who have imported cars have followed the same path. Hope you’re still keeping up with this... I’m finding it a pain, but...different scenario. If you have “any” advice i would be eternally grateful. I brought my 1996 BMW Z3 (pristine condition, all original, 1st made in series, as an import and would have either taken it back home with me or to Belgium where a friend lives. My wife wanted me to stay in country (UK), as she is British and wanted to live here after being in States most of our 25+ yrs of marriage. Long and Short: It’s been bit over a year and I want to put the Z into my wife’s name so at least someone can legally drive it, and it can be registered here in UK with taxes paid. When it came in I got letter stating no taxes were do & all paperwork was in order.. I CAN’T FIND IT NOW!! I just received package from DVLA in mail today with application for 1st vehicle tax & registration as well as V55/5 form. Would have done it before but didn’t want to stay in UK so it wasn’t until I applied to remain the headache began. Anyway, it’s in my name, I have title, which has 1st date of registration, plates from Florida, valid insurance from Florida....blah blah... It’s never has the V55 log book “thingy” so obviously need one. Do I follow the guidelines on your post or, or, or....I am about to have a nervous breakdown, so please somebody tell me how to deal with DVLA! I do have an MOT on it, where lights were changed..etc. It will expire in April and I don’t want to go thru that again before getting it registered.

Thanks for the info, what I'm currently wondering is - can I drive the car into the UK to get it here since I'm a UK citizen as long as I've got insurance etc or will I have to trailer from the port before MOT and re-reg etc, the DVLA website seems to only cover people who are also immigrating allowing them a 6 month period to register if they aren't sure they're staying. Basically I'm thinking of bringing a euro car over from the RoI.

Basically I'm thinking of bringing a euro car over from the RoI. No worries at all . I'll be honest, I cannot say. It's a grey area! Being an EU vehicle I *think* the strict ruling is that you have to get it registered ASAP as soon as lands, thus applying for the NOVA etc. Being the EU however, I believe the taxes are much lower for getting the NOVA completed. The one thing I will say is whatever you do, chase up the DVLA on a weekly basis. This will also help with keeping tabs of any issues with the application too.

As far as I know, as a UK resident you're not allowed to drive a foreign registered vehicle in the UK at any time.

That doesn't mean it's legal, the issue being that driving a foreign registered vehicle in the UK as a UK resident is technically tax evasion. As far as I know this is the law in every EU country; very strictly enforced in some, e.g. Denmark.

if an imported unregistered vehicle has sat in someones garage for several years and they are now selling it, what pitfalls are to be avoided if wanting to buy it and register it?
I'm sure i read somewhere that some rules have changed and make this tricky?

make sure import duties have been paid this is called a nova form i THINK you can call dvla and check if its been paid with the chassis number but if it hasn't its a big rolling fine per day its been in the country and not had the nova paid.

looks like £5 a day fine since it arrived then = £1000s in fines?

Yes not heard of it being enforced but I don't really know that many people in this situation its worth the call to dvla though because if the duty has been paid its straight forward to register and these couple of pages are all you will need to sail through the hole process.

Exactly...there possibly will be a record with customs or a border ferry terminal or something some where depends how it came into the country but same as the tax man they tell you what you owe and you have to prove otherwise so if they say its been here 6 years and you cant prove anything different big fine
