I need to replace the DMF in my 04 Td5 Disco.
Have aquired one to replace it,but not having dealt with a dmf before am unsure of what to look for!

It varies for each application. LUK used to do a application disc that showed what was acceptable, they also do the correct tool to measure it. (My previous job was manager for a huge car parts outfit and in 10 years I only ever sold one of those tools, the reason being most people just replace the part after removing the gearbox rather than measuring the dmf!)

Used DMF are a waste of time, either fit a new one or better still a solid conversion kit.

Do you really want to go through all the grief of pulling it apart again if the used part is goosed . I look for rock up and down and more than 20mm of fairly free play but I always let the customer know that if the new clutch finishes off a dmf I won't be doing it any cheaper next time

I agree with all comments ... however a new one is not an option financially ..... i was given this by a reputable company, who had done an engine swap and swapped out the fly wheel and clutch as a matter of course ..... ( have been given the clutch as well, hardly any wear at all on the friction plate)
Have been having running issues with the engine for the last few weeks, had the ecu changed as it was showing it was failing, new maf etc ( no oil in red plug before anyone says that) and new crank sensor. Have had various checks done, we have now put it down to dmf failing and crank sensor losing signal .....

If it's got minimal rock up and down and it's with the plate it was run with then it's probably fine it's usually new plate with old dmf that goes tits up

Crank sensor reads off the fixed side of the dmf so I doubt it's giving you the issues

it may be the crank sensor wiring, as mentioned the signal is picked up from the fixed section

Never had engine problem due to DMF. The solid flywheel conversion makes the clutch operation heavy. Depends on how you want it to drive. I've thrown 2 late model low mileage TD5 engines away this year due to holes in pistons. Both ran, one really badly and one felt like injector issues but we had the head off just to double check. Never had to replace and engine ecu in a decade and I've seen a LOT of TD5s
