Genuine Factory Mk2 Jetta GTI 16v 1990 (G Reg) in Atlas Grey. It’s a super rare car. 12 months MOT.
Sadly I have an opportunity to buy something I've wanted for a long time and I don't have the space or time to use my Jetta anymore, so reluctantly I'm offering it for sale.
Mechanicals:
The car is mechanically sound, Its been fitted with a 2.0li Audi 6A Block with (man in the shed) Polished and ported (flowed) head. The Original 1.8 block can be supplied if requested, was removed from the car in perfect working order to improve horsepower. The 6A block is identical to the original KR Except with added capacity. To look at it you would never know it was any different to original spec except if you look hard enough you can see the 6A Stamp on the block. It has the same performance as the well-known 9A 2.0li block and very similar if not the same as the ABF block only it’s not a tall block. The bottom end was rehoned with new piston rings and all new bearings before being fitted. The head has brand new genuine VW Valve stem steals, ABF Cams (which are the raciest standard cams in the 1.8 / 2.0li vw range) and the engine was mated together with genuine VW head bolts and a genuine vw steel head gasket. The engine is very quiet on tick over no tappet noise, Pulls strong and the induction noise from the standard air intake is very satisfying. The car I took the 6A from was an Audi 80 (~1995) which was in the scrap yard due to a rear end shunt. Unfortunately someone had taken the clocks so I don’t know the engines ultimate mileage but with the full engine rebuild, new rings, seals and headgasket, I cant imagine this engine not lasting 150,000 Miles at least. The car has had done less than 100 miles on the latest cambelt, has a new water pump, and had a brand new battery last week. The Jetta itself has done 165,000 miles, I’ve had it for 10+ years and bought it on 155,000 miles. In all the time ive owned it, it has been garaged in a warm dry garage. The gearbox is perhaps the weakest point on the car mechanically, it’s not the original one (as the mk2 16v boxes tend to explode) I don’t know which car the gearbox is from as it was fitted before I bought it. It can take a little fettling to get it into reverse, but goes into forward gears fine, doesn’t wine and seems to pull well, it may need looking at and perhaps replacing the linkages, but it drives well. The brakes have been upgraded with 280mm early VR6 calipers and carriers with 280mm golf G60 VW disks, these have some real stopping power compared to the originals, the downside is, the standard GTI wheels no longer fit on the front of the car, so its 15” or bigger only. This car is not equipped with power steering. It has Koni fully height and damper adjustable coil overs, they were more than £800 when new. They are quite hard at the moment but cornering ability is silly, they look great and can be adjusted more softly, they have probably done less than 10,000 miles and should be good for a long time. The alternator has recently been rebuilt so is good as new. The exhaust system is fully standard from the manifold back, I can supply a stainless backbox, that I was never a fan of so was never fitted. I think the car would benefit from a 4 branch manifold but it’s not exactly slow. I would also suggest it’s probably time for a few bushes to be replaced however it flew through its recent MOT so nothing has gone. Has the uprated hard plastic rain tray under the bonnet.
Extirior:
Its important to state, there is 0 rot on this car, Its never had rot cut out removed or repaired, I think its probably one of the best condition shells you are going to find on the market. It can’t be over stated how clean the car is from rust. Nothing under the arches, nothing underneath. Having said that, the car has been resprayed, I had a windows out, doors off full tear down respray done shortly after I bought it, this was because every panel had a slight mark or blemish on it and by the time we got around the car, it was easier to just do the whole thing. The pictures should show how good it was, you would struggle to tell me which pictures were before it was painted. I was told that the car was an undercover cop car when it was new, and that would explain why the car was so clean and looked after. As part of the respray I put in a new genuine front windscreen as the original was cracked, a replacement rear screen as the element didn’t work, new window seals, body coloured and electric mirrors, bought new arches for all four wheels, bought new skirts and door trims, deleted the extra wiper hole, removed the jetta GTI 16v badge but left the centre VW badge, removed the boot lock (its is there but none functional) The rear bumper was replaced with a genuine VW one and the front was replaced with a none genuine one, the rear bumper had had a small dent / warp in it and the front had a bit of damage on the black plastic part that couldn’t be repaired. I fitted an entire golf rallye headlight setup with slam panel, these are worth in the region of 1k now in original condition. This one however has a full 4 relay new wiring loom, one relay for the main beam, one for dipped, one for side and one for fogs. Which I built myself with the original wiring colours of the car. The headlights themselves have been uprated with Xenon headlights from the 1st Gen Audi TT, the bulbs, projector housings and projector glass all come from the Audio TT, the ballasts are from an Audi s3. The wiring of the relay is such that with the main beam on, the dipped beam also remain and the fog lights come on too, which gives you a much better driving experience in the dark, coupled with the xenons, the night time driving experience is probably one of the best of the mk2’s available setups. The xenons do not bleed light above the cut off and do not blind on coming drivers, like just sticking a set of ebay cheapo bulbs would. There are genuine front fogs, and a pair on none genuine indicator lenses that are smoked. The door handles are the mk3 style. The rear lights on the car are imported from America and are half smoked none orange, personally I think they finished the car really well at the back, but I will supply the standard items should you prefer. It has the much sought after Jetta GTI 16v boot spoiler (the body coloured one) which is the original one to the car. Genuine VW Stamped BBS RM 15” split rim alloy Wheels (rare) With Gold Bolts (original BBS Steel bolts also supplied should you want to refurbish the bolts and put them back to standard) These are probably worth more than £1000, May sell separately I have a Set of 16” Azev A’s in poor condition that could be put on the car instead these are secured with VW locking nuts. Electric / Heated Body Coloured Mirrors (rare), Heated Washer Jets (rare), the car has the factory sunroof which has never leaked (and has a new vw seal on it) and bee-sting antenna for the radio.
Rallye Golf Headlights in Near perfect condition, No cracks or chips. Audi TT Xenon Headlights with Audi Ballasts using Audi TT Projectors for perfect none glaring Xenon headlights, these are not the kind of headlights that bleed light into oncoming traffic and they have a perfect cut off line of light as they would in OEM Audi TT Headlights. They have been through at least 5 MOT’s but will supply jetta front end and slam panel if requested.
Interior:
Inside we have a Pioneer headunit DVD MP3 player, no screen installed but can be mated to one. This is linked to two alpine amps, one for the subwoofer and one for the speakers. The sub is also alpine, the speakers are very good ones and were not cheap but I can’t just remember who made them, the fronts have crossovers and separate tweeters mounted in the dash. The door speakers are fitted into audioscape door pods which look excellent.
Currently the car has leather door cards and cloth seats, the original cloth door cards can be fitted instead or you can buy the leather seats and door cards for £200 extra. They are in good condition and ill give you all the original door cards. The leather door cards are the electric window kind. The car has 4 window electric windows running on a seat Toledo control loom (with genuine electric window centre console), this allows for one touch up and down operation. The electric motors are all brand new OEM kind. The current seats in the car are the original jetta 16v ones, the driver’s side has the typical for the age hole in the drivers bolster. The Heater box has been completely overhauled with new heater matrix, new air flaps and greased up so the heating system works flawlessly unlike most mk2’s where the flaps have fallen apart and they are stiff. The heater controls themselves are one of a kind EL Glow back lit with lazer cut steel icons, It looks 100% oem in the day (only better) but at night the light glowed through from the back and they look fantastic see pictures. The Clocks are 16v VDO 160MPH Items, with fully working MFA display, no cracks or bleeds anywhere, Hard to get a good set of these now. The dash illumination has all been changed to red which looks great. The car has a two-stage fog light switch for front and back. The car is fitted with a thatcham1 alarm immobiliser Toad AI606, this is wired to the door windows for total closure and to the boot pop solenoid, which opens the boot. It also has full remote central locking including the fuel flap. The alarm has a brand new toad Sounder. The headlining was originally white/grey but ive switched it with an OEM black one and all the trim to go with it, it’s much nicer and super rare on these.
The car does have one or two paint blemishes which I will try to photograph and it does have the odd issue that could do with fettling which I will go through, things like the steering wheel is squeaking when turned etc. Someone who wants a car that’s 98% completed could not go wrong with this one, it’s a rare Gem in my eyes and I shall be sad to see it go after so long. I never thought I would ever sell it, I had imagined I would still probably have it as an old man. I couldn’t count the hours I’ve put into personally working on this car, and it will be hard to find one to best it as a base.
