The little dash light on my Corolla. It's quite dim, and not good at illuminating the dash. But if you flip it open, you get a stream of light right at your lap, great for reading maps in de the dark. I don't know if it's unique or not, but it really makes me smile. Not common but far from unique, you probably see this less and less. It's good for reading maps in the dark because it's a map light. People tend to use GPS now so map lights aren't going to be so well used and probably aren't designed in.

60's Jags. I loved the slender semi-circular metal feature on the lower part of the steering wheel which was actually an ultra-light horn switch. On the Mk X / 420G it activated the enormous twin-tone horns which sounded as though the QE2 was docking.

Ash trays are no longer common, today you get cup holders and if necessary you can buy an ash tray in cup shape to put in there. That was a lovely touch in my P5B Coupé, all the ashtrays had cigar lighters built in, (1 for each seat in the back).

This upper grille/intake on the Toyota CROWN, but especially the sidelight/indicator combo.

Not retro but the little flap in a mk4 Golf for when the sun is between visors, all cars should have that.

To be fair we didn't, we were road tripping in my mates GTTDI, and it was blinding and I just happened to tap the area saying we need a sunvisor there, and it sounded hollow so I pulled it down, et voila lol.

Hitting the #1 seat memory button when my wife has been in my S-type and it returning to my settings.
The little Alfa badge on the dials of my 156 that lit up when the lights were on.

This is a NICE thread, I like this thread. Those vents on the rear quarters of Nissan Bluebirds. Actually, in a similar vein to the Mazda comment above, the way the chrome window trim on the Bluebird is heavier at the back, somehow it makes the glasshouse look that much better, especially because of the black frames to everything.

Can't find any gifs of it, but the AE86 Levin has a twin brightness side light. When you indicate the side you are turning to goes as bright as the dipped headlamps and lights up the side of the road so it is easier and safer to see when preparing to turn. They stayed on for about 3 seconds after the indicator was turned off (or instantly if you indicated in the opposite direction. Don't know of any other car which does this.

I love the ignition-key position on older Saabs - not really better, but feels more satisfying somehow. Frameless windows - coupes, Subarus, Minis. Something again nicer about them but hard to say why exactly. The unfussy square side intake on AW11 MR2s- a bit like the Bluebird one above, but bigger - lovely no-nonsense function. Round door handles on FIat Strada/Ritmos. Actually there's loads of great bonkers little details on Stradas, Pandas of that era. Fabric dash with removable ashtray in Mk1 Panda And agricultural 'gives no fucl<s' asymetric metal grille Neue Klaas 1602/2002 Shark nose with chrome trim that goes round the whole car like a luxury motorboat: I'm sure I'll think of more...

Not retro but the little flap in a mk4 Golf for when the sun is between visors, all cars should have that. My 93 passat b3 has it, too. But I guess (not sure) only cars with sliding roof got it, since they have different visors, not going till the mirror. But that mini visor is just not big enough, the sun still shines through the gaps sometimes. Our Audi A2 had this - and no sunroof
