Afternoon all,
I have a '98 Audi S4 with just shy of 150K on the clock and the rear (quattro) diff has started making a racket. Party my own fault, I asked the garage guy to change all the fluid and he said what came out was like tar and what he put back wasn't - it was as per spec. It appears that what came out was a highly refined mix of assorted goo to thicken it up and fill the gaps, and I need some ideas as to what this might be so I can whack it back in there again. Since the change it now whines at anything over about 40mph, regardless of in gear or not, under drive or not. It's the sound of the diff turning.
Before you ask, yes I've phoned around for repairs to the diff and everyone either flat out refuses, says the bits are made of unobtanium or quotes me a price "between 650 and 2 grand" to repair. Ah, ouch. And if the bits are impossible to source then what's he going to repair with?!
There are secondhand diffs out there on eBay - mostly from Latvia it seems - but they're going to be in roughly the same state. Probably a waste of time & cash.
So - what's the mixture please, anyone? Any thoughts? Pleaseandthankyouinadvance!
