Hi everyone
If you build a rod or kit car without an existing chassis number etc how do they decide the road tax band to put it in? I cant imagine it can be emissions based as that's impossible to check accurately. If it's engine size, then is it year of manufacture of the engine that dictates which band it's in? If I used a post 2006 audi v8 would I be stung for the big road tax or would it be the pre 2006 K band?

It's done purely on the pre 2001 capacity band.
<1549 - £150 >1549 - £245
Age of engine is only taken into account in the BIVA for deciding on the emissions for the BIVA test and subsequent MOT tests - It has no bearing on the tax due that is just the capacity on the pre '01 rates.

Have you looked into the details of building a kit car without a chassis number?

DVLA call it Road Tax on all their communications, on the 'car tax' page and even cars that drive around with 'Car tax check' written on them.

I've not looked into it in detail, it'd be a GRP porsche 356 shell with bespoke chassis, not a beetle pan. Do you think this would be a problem. the donors would be 3 different cars so not entirely straightforward

So it's not entirely clear when the the basic IVA gives way to the Normal IVA. As a home builder the normal IVA isn't possible

Have you actually seen how much space is in that engine bay? And that much weight behind the rear wheels is asking for a lot of trouble dude. What's the chassis like? Interested to see what's there if its not using a Bug pan (a Bug pan would never, ever cope with the 4.2, mine struggles with the motor I have in it!)

As a home built special your car will be BIVA - the DV**, whatever they are called today, will issue a chassis number when you get around to the registration process.
For registering the car and what it may end up with plate wise there is the points scheme if you have enough parts from a single donor. If you don't have enough points from a single donor, it's either all new parts for a new reg or a Q plate.
It's all pretty straightward but the key with making the process easy is to keep it simple.

fad, mid engined, no beetle bits in sight. the newer 3.0 v6 2wd boxes have the CV shafts almost right at the flywheel and the v8 is very short, so total drivetrain length isn't too bad. Although the 2.7 v6 would probably be more than enough. there's a guy on Lateral G been having a go, pic below. He is using the earlier 01 box with the greater bellhousing depth IN A REAL 356. this is HIS pic/\ the newer boxes move the driveshaft centreline forwards It's just at the planning stage, i need to go and see Gary at the speedster clinic and have a good look at the bare shells

it looks like using a chopped up boxster chassis/monocoque might be a possible option,

the new boxes have the driveshaft in front of the clutch it seems.

looks like he gave up, Schwarz performance in the states are working on it now. he's got 2 boxster subframes and a tube chassis. He must be crazy as restoring the original 356 would make a lot of money. looks like there's not really enough room inside so the newer gearbox would be better if there's not a suspension clash. latest here www.schwartzperformance.com/1958-porsche-356/
