I understand with a full car licence, gained before 2001, i can ride a 50cc moped with no L plates
If i take a CBT i can ride over 50cc and up to 125cc with L plates
My questions are:
Without the CBT does the moped have to be restricted to (ie to 30mph)?
With a CBT would a moped still have to be restricted?
With a CBT is there any restriction on an up to 125cc bike?
Does the CBT need renewing after two years even with a full driving licence?
Is it worth it, easy, and/or highly punishable to remove the restrictor? what sort of speed can a 50cc 'ped do?

Corolla/rolla has it nailed.
A moped is a vehicle category, your licence doesn't affect that.
You can have unrestricted 50cc (for example most Honda C50s, without going into boring details) but they are classed as motorcycles, not mopeds, and come under the "up to 125" license category
p.s. certain aprilias were 33hp de-restricted.

Yes... but it's no longer a moped (legally, you'll have to update the V5) and you'd have to carry L-plates. Basically, you can't just de-restrict it and razz round (legally) you 'have' to register it as a 50cc motorbike.

i wouldnt bother do the cbt (it is easy ) get yourself a 125 ! (miles more safe than a 30mph moped !! )
with moped yes you can tune them (been there done that ) 70cc kits light rollers different variators expansion chambers etc etc but in my experience (with 4 boys all had "tuned mopeds") they last 5mins there no designed these days to be pushed to the limits cheap chinese curse word

What sort of speed might a limited 125 scooter-style bike do?
There is one stretch of national speed limit road near me which i'd like to use but someone going significantly slower would be dangerous

Yes but can that be done with a driving licence and a CBT? yes, it becomes the same as any other sub-125cc bike. Learner legal 125 should do 65mph. I wouldn't want to do that for long though. Avoid cheap Chinese bikes, they're built to a price and just don't last.

Look on the back of your licence Actually it's funny you mention that, it does have something which i'm not sure about AM means 50cc up to 28mph A means 'You can drive: motorbikes with a power output more than 35kW or a power to weight ratio more than 0.2kW/kg motor tricycles with a power output more than 15kW You can also drive motorbikes in categories A1 and A2.' Erm, ok What about 79(3) in column 12?

+2, definitely do the CBT, it's easy, useful and relatively cheap. Then you'll want to get a full license, which I wouldn't recommend. Big bikes are boring, dangerous and no fun at all
