Hi all,
maybe a silly or even damgerous idea, but my vertical compressor does not have the power to run air tools properly. I can't afford to buy another compressor, and I was wondering if I could make it more useable by creating a second tank using a propane bottle.
Its a pressure vessel so should be Ok, immediate problem I can see is the lack of a drain for condensation.
Sorry if this has been posted before.
Any thoughts? TIA

cannot think of any reasons not to use one, bar checking what pressure they are rated for.
I would add a drain point, either drill and tap the bottom or mount it upside down and have a drain on the fitting going in.

I used one for years, never had any problem with it except for the smell of gas for a while, I would be tempted to unscrew the valve off the top, fill it with water, put the valve back invert the bottle, then you can safely drill for a drain cock, plus whe water should help with getting rid of the smell.

I also have used propane bottles as expansion air tanks. Make certain the tank is empty before removing the valve, fit a valve to the tank so you can use the tank on its own and you don't get an uncontrolled release of air when disconnecting from the compressor Ttfn Glenn

I did as v8ian above said. I have a lovely silent running ex mod compressor and it started leaking, it's mounted in my garage attic, so I bypassed it and used a propane cylinder adding a drain valve. I unscrewed the top and filled it with water to get the gas out. Works a treat and have a bigger capacity.

Do you have any more details about your ex mod compressor? I'm guessing it's not actually silent but how quiet is it?

Yes, it's like this ( but a different make/ colour) it's very quiet.......it's basically 3 fridge compressors, so if you want to know how loud it is get yourself 3 fridges and have a listen.......it's like that 😂 Slightly off topic, I made a friend one out of an old gas bottle and a fridge compressor, and regulator/ cut out off the bay, it works a treat and almost free.
