A comment on another thread got me thinking about roof chops - I remember drooling over chopped roofs in Custom Car all these years ago and it just got me pondering on whether it's something that is in the past and should stay there or whether it's a look that will make a return. Should it remain with the hotrod scene? Are retros or even not-quite-retros not right for chops.

I think it depends on the original proportions of the car, plus the style of mods. The quality of the chop also makes a huge difference. I used to own Jidderbug and I always thought it was just the right shape. Some bugs look horrible with roof chops, but the guy who did this got it just right:

It strikes me that, with DVLA clamping down on "radically modified" cars, that anything with a monocoque and a roof chop (chassied cars are immune so Pops and their ilk are OK) is just BEGGING for a retrospective BIVA and a Q, with all the heartache that entails!

Pretty Much every one is different and very much down to whoever is wielding the grinder!

To answer the original question, barring the Obvious exceptions like beetles, not Much built after the '60s looks good chopped. I never used to like post 55 or so cars chopped, but have recently grown to like suff like '60s hardtops with a mild Chop to accentuate the longness/lowness of them.
I think burrows e28 gets away with it from some angles, but then others not.

Also, remember the fad for 'phantom' street rods in the '90s with stuff like calibra roofs grafted on so they looked chopped?
Can't say I was a fan tbh but there must have been some work in one to do it right.

I like subtle roof-chops. Tough if you're a builder- if you're going to go through all the work you probably want people to notice it —but for me a well done chop of an inch or two max that's so sublime it leaves you wondering how the car looks so sleek rather than 'nice roof-chop' is a true success. This Not this

I've done several roofchops. Usually the owner will tell you to cut a lot out of it, but every once in a while you get to do a gentleman's chop. Like this one. I was really pleased with how that one turned out. Taking just enough out is probably as hard or harder to do. Cleaning up the lines while keeping it in proportion. ( you can see the difference to the stock truck beside it ) And no, I don't think its just a Hot Rod thing. For example, there were the Chopped and sectioned racing Mini's...

Would love to see this finished : Yeh that works really well, gives it a bit of an early TVR look. Anyone ever roof chopped a GT6? could work if subtle.

Anyone ever roof chopped a GT6? could work if subtle. That could look amazing! No IVA either as it's a separate chassis. I was always of the opinion that roofchops only work on rounded shaped cars, but some of the photos posted above tell me otherwise. Personally I think subtlety is key for making them work!

I've posted this Capri before but it belongs here to demonstrate that a later model can work with a roof chop. I mean every mod done to this car could be described in a dictionary of 50s kustom techniques but the end result isn't really a traditional custom car of any sort. As far as I can tell, the rear and front screens have been laid down removing the need to stretch the roof which helps a lot.

An Audi TT is basically a roof chopped new Bug As said monocoques aren't a good idea to chop as it counts as modified chassis so requires a BIVA. My Volksrod is chopped a little bit... A lot... A LOT... LOL

For me personally, retro styled new cars like the Fiat 500 and the Mini just look bloated compared to their originals.
And the 2 pics of them in this thread show that chopping one just makes it worse.
They should try sectioning one instead...
