My car failed it's MOT today on both headlights. The actual headlight lenses and ribbed reflectors are perfect. The original halogen bulbs have been changed for Xenon of same wattage. There are normal bulbs and not HID's.
The fail notice states - "Headlamp aim beam image obviously incorrect"
Is this simply a case of the Xenon bulbs being too white for the test machine and reverting to original bulbs for the test will gain a pass ?
Cheers.

For me, it was that the headlights needed adjusting.
Ask the tester?

its not the colour, its because the reflector for a H4 lamp is designed for a different source of light.
a hid arc emitts a very different spread of light to a halogen filament bulb.
stick some good H4's back in and marvel at an MOT pass, and actually seeing where you're going at night without blinding everyone.
as an aside, I have tried a retrofit LED lamp unit, and the beam pattern is as sharp as a good halogen unit, though not strictly road legal.

edit, missed they are not HID.
LOL. ignore that then.
what vehicle? I have had quite a few late 90's and early 2000's cars with plastic lamps beong very cloudy from UV damage, some cutting compound has fixed every one so far however the worst don't last long, I'm sure some uv resistant clear vinyl would help.
if its older, it may be tired reflectors losing the silver reflective coating.

Are the bulbs correctly seated and secure? If they're not it can distort the beam pattern, also if they're cheap chinese tat the bulb reflector can be in the wrong place or plane.

It says its the beam image therefor not aim, it would state too high/low if it was just the aim.
Just throw some standard halogens back in and go from there.

Another vote for ask the tester as long as the bulbs give out light in the same position as the originals beam pattern shouldn't be effected

Halfords are by far the worst for incorrect fitting of headlight bulbs . Xc90 Volvo in the other day had had one fitted on a Sunday and apparently it took ages according to a the owner . I showed him the two metal tabs that pull out to remove the lamp and the bulb was just shoved in with the clip in the bottom of the case

I've had lots of incorrectly fitted bulbs in, usually preceeded by some numpty saying "people keep flashing me".
