Right this one is confusing me.
Its a 1983 RRC. when its between power and overrun on the throttle (ie really light on the pedal) I've got a harsh vibration through the front axle (I think) which disappears when I either let right off the throttle, or power on.
I have been wondering if its a Cv joint, although theres no click on hard lock, or possibly the diff itself. Lying underneath and pulling doesn't show any prop UJ play
Since armchair diagnosis is much easier than actually getting out & under, anybody got any thoughts?
BTW its a 300tdi with a 5 speed R380 box
TIA Chris

Try checking the steering damper. Take it off and see if it has any resistance. If not a new one will make the world of difference.

Hi, Yes my first thought was steering damper, but it could also be a universal joint in the propshaft that is seized or seizing in one plane. So disconnect one end and see if there's any stiffness in each end.

Right, thanks for that Guys, however 'tis neither the steering damper nor the front prop, took both off today and they're both fine. I'm heading towards it being a diff bearing, which is floating about when its not under load, either power or overrun, since I would expect a CV to show other signs of failure, I've had one go before and it was difficult to even keep the steering wheel straight!

panhard rod bushes ? and have you checked the rear axle ball joint?
landies and rangies do weird things with vibrations not being where you think they are

Yea tell me about it, and it doesn't help being six wheel. Its just had the centre axle balljoint for the last MOT, anmd I checked the panhard rod, and replaced the hockey stick bushes, since the last set only lasted 18 months.
I haven't had the chance to do a proper roadtest yet, but I'm still thinking its probably the diff bearings

Took the OSF swivel apart today, since its a bit corroded and leaking. The 5 bolts holding the front stub axle were a bit loose, but on stripping the unit down to check the CV, I found a bronze collar on the inner driveshaft, inside the swivel housing, which was cracked. Replaced the swivel and collar, rebuilt hub with new seals etc, and so far it all seems ok. I'm not sure why this collar, which appears to just be a packer, should cause that sort of vibration (if it did) but fingers crossed!
