So, after a number of family passings, I've started to think more and more about the future and to use a well worn phrase, 'the bucket list'. One item that that has been on mine since before I bought my first Beetle is owning a real and drivable 911. So I'm starting to work my way towards it. In the next week or so, the Jag will be finished and market ready. Once sold (with luck) a basis for a 911 build will be sought. TBH, I don't have the money to do it all at once, but I want to make a start to work towards the goal! Having had had a couple of early SWB 912s and knowing how rusty they were, I will probably go for an SC / Carrera /964 as the base and build from there. Anything preGalvanization such as SWB cars are out. Even 'rust free' with those, invariably isn't! I've always liked narrow body early cars, but some impact bumper Carreras with duck tails are starting to turn my eye. Funny how time and fashion (and your realistic pocket money) changes your tastes! So, if you were building a LWB aircooled 911, what would you build? It can either be a stock style (like 911 ST) or a specific car. Backdated or modified original. Extra bonus points for pics Thanks for the ideas!

I'm not mad keen on impact bumper 911s. The 80s seems to cling on to them like a bad smell, possibly because they were what all my mates wanted as impressionable teenagers, or because they were a bit of a cliché of Thatcher's Britain. I would therefore rescue as late an impact bumper car as I could, fit the earlier panels and a ducktail, then paint it in the fantastic green pictured below.

I absolutely love 911s and I make no attempt to hide that I wish my 944 had its engine up the other end. My favourites seem to change with the season and at the moment I have a hankering for a 993 which I'm sure was the last of the air cooled 911s with the 996 following? The 964 seems a good call however their prices seem to be climbing at a rate which will see them unobtainable by me very soon. I have read a bit about them and work with a friend who used to maintain a few many years ago. I am sure he was telling me about a prolific oil leak that they suffered with which was a very costly repair. I can't seem to remember exactly what it was but I seem to remember oil coolers being mentioned. Either way I am sure you will do your research prior to buying so the above remarks are kind of useless. Whatever you decide I am certain you're investment will be very safe and you will have years of pleasant motoring.

Get the best 964 coupe you can afford if you can - I bought one three years ago when they were just starting to rise again. It had a horrendous oil leak, a week's MoT, and the owner's son was just starting to learn to drive and obviously wasn't going to be let loose in it. They were sitting at around £20-25k at that point. I got it for 15 and a bit expecting to have to replace oil pipes and the filter head, or at the very least spend a horrible day or so replacing dowty seals. Couldn't be arsed, so smoked it around for ages, topping it up with MoBil 1 at every fuel stop or whenever the gauge started to drop. Went through ten litres on a mad road trip around Europe then decided it was time to do something about it, so jacked up that corner, cleaned it all up, then replaced the copper washer on the filter drain plug. Literally ten minutes' work. Now, in real terms it's a worse car than my mk5 GTI - it's probably marginally quicker and marginally faster, but it's noisier, worse on fuel, and obviously only really seats two. And if it's a wet day you'll have a time trying to keep the screen clear without having the windows open a crack, too. However. No car I have ever owned can make me smile the way it does. Whether it's just looking at it in the garage, or taking it on a 2,000 mile road trip for a week, it always makes me smile and always gets me out of a foul mood. I love it. I miss it. God I miss it.

I didn't need to see these, I've got real hankering for a longnose 911 and no money!!! I'm wondering about starting with a Covin body and backdating and narrowing the arches as Retowarick did with his then putting that on a Pie Valley chassis with MGF running gear. I suspect the hard part will be an affordable body. The steel wheeled look works best for me

Personally I'll settle for this one, the first RHD 911. Its still out there declared sorn, amazingly all four 1965 model year RHD 911's that officially came into the UK still survive (well 3 are sorn'ed only 1 is on the road).

If I thought I stood any chance at all of getting that approved for use in the US, I'd be sending you some folding notes across the pond. The weird thing is, you could build it here and then drive it (In Minnesota anyway), but not bring it into the country... Land of the free and all that!

So I was trawling through the offers on thesamba and spotted my old car: When it was mine... And now on thesamba. www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1981131It now has no-name wheels, the motolita steering wheel has gone (as have the nice headlights). To think I sold it to a guy on the Porsche parts desk at the local Porsche dealer for $2500 for parts or major resto. Now it's a cool $15k just three years later! I found a 912 which was 'rust free' from So Cal for $5k and a real Porsche engine - only to find out that this replacement '66 was just better at hiding its free rust! At least it's taught me where to look for rusty stuff! I get my Jag XK back this weekend so, it's soon to be advertised. Once / if it sells, the hunt will be on!

I'd avoid the Singer-style cars and the Marcus Walker efforts - what might have once been cool is now nauseatingly 'scene'.
Much as I love 964s, I'd be tempted by a very late impact bumper car in a clean colour - silver with the rare 911-offset Teledial wheels, for example. Stance it a little, free it from any kind of spoiler related ephemera and enjoy it.

My dream 911 would be the Carrera RS 2.7. But if you're going impact bumper, why not go all the way!
