Afternoon all,
I'm basically making most of a Mk2 cortina from steel (judging by whats left!) and I'm now at the stage where I need to start thinking about the chassis rails , yes I know, its a monocoque. I'm having real difficulty in finding any of the above, let alone anything in the right profile. Ebay only throws up sections for VW camper floors, and the guy is ignoring me! Anybody know a good supplier? TIA Chris .

Hi, They are not usually standard sizes so you may have to fold them yourself. Although I did find this amongst my bookmarks, about the only one that's still active. I've not used them so I can't vouch for them, maybe someone else can. www.steelpanels.co.uk/ Colin

I made my own at work for my Ford 100e as they didn't exist to buy, only the straight pieces. You may need to get some sections made up and make them fit.

I've bought them before from a now-defunct parts supplier, I could make some up, but it would be difficult to make them in the lengths I need, about 18 inches, and my two folders are either not long enough, or the cheapo one I have will not make a sharp enough fold! Thanks for your replies

Top hat sections i used to get from a steel supplyer rather than an automotive supplyer, usually cheaper and more choice? last Mk2 i did all the outriggers with sections from a supplyer in braintree, they specialised in lorry body sections like side raves and the like but carry'd a lot of shapes, cant for the life of me remember their name though you can get chassis rails if you happen to be nigerian prince www.steelpanels.co.uk/category/ford/cortina-mk-2/floor-cortina-mk-2/page/2/

Do you know the sizes of top hat might be able to help you out. Yea exactly, I have bought a couple of parts from him, the quality is good, but I know what you mean about price! Mind you, I'd struggle to fabricate some of the parts they manage, so credit where its due. Fasser, checking a small piece, and I guess they should be imperial measurements, nothing really exact, but if you imaging it as fitted to the car, the bottom is 40mm, the sides are 60mm and the overall width across the mounting flanges is 67mm, with each flange 14mm, all dimensions are external. Thanks for all your help again

Can you not use the vice / angle iron method to make the sections, if your folder isn't having any of it? I don't have a folder, but after reading the TonyBMW thread on here I took the plunge, this is 16swg (1.6mm) for my Vauxhall. Obviously this bit was a bit more complex than the various straight sections were. The cutouts are for the curved sections that fit around the ribs in the floor panel. If I was doing it again, I'd have used 18swg and sped the job up.

Fasser, I could really use half a dozen, but would probably get away with four. I was hoping to buy a 2m length so I'd have some stocked when I start on the next cortina, since I've got them queueing up Droopsnoot, thats a lovely piece of work, I must admit I hadn't thought of the angle iron trick, and I read the tonyBmw thread too. DOH!
