Picked this up a few months ago. It had been sat in storage for years. Previous owner (a mate of mine) had found it had put a new fuel tank on it, had the calipers refurbed, replaced the windscreen and driven it a bit. I swapped an 850i for it. Been doing little bits to it between other projects. So far: New leads/rotor/belts Oil and spin on oil filter conversion Updated e28 water pump, viscous and fan (original viscous was £200 - no,ta) New coolant and fuel hoses/filter Thermostat and housing NOS gear gaitor as old one was missing New indicator lenses Fresh brake fluid and coolant Valve clearances done, loose banjo bolts secured Sticky window fixed New exhaust Also gave him a bloody good clean. Just doing some suspension work atm, got some H&R's sat here, just waiting on some Bilsteins and a few bushes. It's booked in to have the carb rebuilt at Classic Heroes, not many people will touch the Solex 4a1.. She's pretty solid but has some surface rust that needs sorting. Lots of parts for this car are hard to come by now so always on the lookout. Few pics, (doing this in my phone so in the worst order possible, sorry):

Great find! I love E12's. I had a 75 528 with the twin carbs.

Great find! I love E12's. I had a 75 528 with the twin carbs. I think they're supposed to be the preferred setup. I have only seen my e12, never another but I imagine a pre facelift like yours is even harder to find. Is it still alive?

That's lovely. I once saved an E12 518 from being scrapped. Knocked on every door within 200m of where it was left to rot under a tree. Got it cheap, shoved a clutch in it and it served me well for a year. Roof was rusty as hell from the tree sap but I still loved it. Swapped it for an E28 520i.
The bit I'm amazed with is that you swapped an 8 series for it! Always wanted one but never had the bottle to buy one. Never meet your heroes they say!

The 8 series is an odd one. I've had 3 and they were all different, 4.4, 4.0 and 5.0. They are real headturners but have so many little issues it does your nut in. Plus, parts are very expensive and they are an absolute boat. Also, they're not quick enough for the looks.

I ordered a twin Weber kit through Fritz's Bits, but none of it fit properly so had to send it back. I subsequently found out that it is possibly the only remaining original 528 with a Solex on the road in the UK, so although I realise the carb isn't ideal, I think it's worth keeping reasonably original.

I'd have gone with a single Weber replacement and stuck the Solex in a cardboard box just incase you ever wanted it put back on, but I take your point.

I'd have gone with a single Weber replacement and stuck the Solex in a cardboard box just incase you ever wanted it put back on, but I take your point. I did some research on this as it does make sense if it's toast but I came across quotes like this: "In my experience the Solex works better when marginal than a Weber 36DGES at its best. It might be worth investing a couple of hundred in the Solex before spending $500 plus for questionable alternatives" Mine idles well, it's just the secondaries that are sticky, so I reckon it's worth spending money on.
