With great reluctance I’m looking to sell my 1986 Mk2 GL Golf which has just 16k miles on the clock. Yes really. Probably the lowest mileage Golf available, particularly with the GL package. It comes with the 1.8l (GTI engine with a carb) engine, manual gearbox and power steering. The latter is essential in these cars and has a lovely weight and feel to it. The manual box is hard to find. Most 1.8l Golf’s had autos. The car is in cracking original condition inside and out. The car is fitted with a genuine Golf tow bar that I fitted. The paint is original bar the lower front panel which I had repainted due to a couple of rust spots. It was painted nicely and you can’t tell. The car has never been welded, and doesn’t need any either. The GL came with lots of chrome detailing and it really looks great. This is a very early one with quarter lights, chrome radiator grill and LHD wipers. The condition of the black plastic is excellent as well. The upholstery is mint. The rear seat looks like it has never been sat in, and the seats are still nice and plump. Please note the Momo steering wheel is not included. The car has spent most of its life sitting, so service history is limited, but the condition of the car speaks for itself. Given its lack of use, I have had to refurbish a few things. The brake fluid has been replaced, and the front brakes overhauled. At the back it needed a new wheel cylinder. The thermostat was sticking so it got a new one and fresh coolant. It also got a new timing belt and tensioner. I have also fitted a weber conversion kit, as the original pierberg carb proved troublesome (it will come with the car). The car has also had new springs and shocks. The only modifications from stock are the springs, which are the high quality Eibach ones, and the brand new alloys. I still have the original steel wheels if a buyer wants to return it to stock. The car now handles brilliantly, whilst maintaining a comfortable ride. I have detailed the engine bay over the winter. I have had various parts powder coated in original satin black, so it now looks neat and tidy. The car will come with a fresh MOT. The engine is smooth and gives great performance. Even with a carb this car will do 0-60 in 9.5s. Only slightly slower than the GTi, but with far better mpg due to the taller gearbox. I’m only selling due to a change in circumstances forcing a sale. I planned to use it for light summer use and classic car shows. It may not be a GTi, buts it’s almost as quick, and you won’t find another in better condition. I’m looking for £5000, however, I’m willing to listen to sensible offers. Car located near Edinburgh and local train station. PM if interested.
