Evening all. I have recently resprayed the metal bumpers on my MK2 Fiesta myself and I was looking for a bit of advice. So, it isn't going to be of a super duper quality I know (Halfords rattle cans, yup) but I was wondering is it better to flatten the paint with 1200 grit and remove the shine or just simply lacquer over what has been done already? There are bits where it isn't full of shine and certain parts have slight over spray, due to the angle I had to do it, hence why I thought I'd ask. It is instructed on the back to go with the latter, however I want to see what others reckon. Cheers

Flatten it off to a finish you're happy with, add a final coat of colour then lacquer while the colour is still tacky, it will adhere better.

I did that exact process with some bike plastics a few years back in my shed, they still look fine to this day.

Is the top coat a pearl/speckle (almost metallic) finish, or block colour? If it's solid you can also flatten the lacquer with 2k and then polish fully for the final finish. If it's a metallic looking finish, don't flatten the lacquer, it will destroy then metallic look. Just go straight to polish. (Recently flattened the lacquer on my metallic green Mazda and it killed the shiny fleck look).

It came up perfect with the last method posted, just could do with a bit of polishing to really bring them up.

So the process worked OK. Good news. I find it easier to get a level coat of lacquer down when the paint is tacky as the solvents in the lacquer soften the paint a bit too.
