For the last year ive been keeping my eyes open for a set and every now and then I get a bit more active and have a search for some.
Ive never been able to find any and no internet searches ever throw up any info.
I'm after a flat top set from a car, standard size.
So, what I'm wondering is if anyone knows where I could get some and are they likely to be silly money when found?
Ive tried joining the droopsnoot group but it wont let me join for some reason.
To help the search, does anyone know what the part numbers from piston suppliers would have been?
Any european opels have this engine?
That I know of I'm looking for Pistons from...
firenza vicount vx4/90 Magnum
any others?
Also, can the pistons be swapped without removing the engine? Head off and out the top with rods? Out the bottom? Crank out?
Thanks.

Do you happen to know the dimensions of the pistons?

Rather annoyingly, after not checking ebay for a week or two, I had missed a complete 2300 magnum engine with all ancillaries for £150!!
I don't have anywhere to do an engine out job at the mo though, and all I want is the better pistons.

Hi, Yes you're looking for engines from Magnum, Firenza, Victor FE in normal VX2300 or VX4/90. The Viscount is a 6 pot based on the Cresta. The engine sits right over the front 'boat' or clip as it's known nowadays. I'm afraid it's an engine out job, it's easier with the head removed, same going back put the head on in the vehicle. Another source could be Jensen Healey or contemporary Lotus parts which won't be cheap. The droopsnoot lot used to be a bit 'sniffy' about lesser models, so keep the CF under your hat.

I only see CF pistons there, hollow top low compression. Thats whats in it at the moment. I need flat top car pistons.

Colin the rods wont go through the bores then? Shame, but not the end of the world. I was trying to register with bedford as part of my user name but tried a few. The forum providers registration page just doesnt seem to work anyway.

There is a jensen healey engine on ebay as well . Ill have a look. The occasional healey engine (and even the odd vauxhall motor) does turn up but unless cheap/broken/incomplete id be better off just finding pistons.

I just looked ta the advert , £200 with 6 hours left no bidders ,.....great ' May not contain pistons ' Oh curse word.

I had a look too but only saw 2L engines.
Anyhow, 'may not contain pistons' isnt good. You'd only say that if you knew there were no pistons but didnt want to admit it!

Hi, I'm pretty sure the pistons and rods come out through the top but ISTR the sump is very close to the front clip to get it out. It's been some years since I've had dealings with them. On one occasion we tried to take front suspension, engine and box out and in again in one lump, we vowed never to do that again.

I made the front removable so I can get the engine out but you cant fit/remove engine and box in one unit. Jacking the motor up to get the sump off is ok, if I can then take pistons out the top. Mainly trying ti not have to take the engine out as its in the road and on a slope!.

Now... not teaching anyones grandad to suck bacon or whatever it is but...
Have you had the head off and seen what pistons you have? I only ask because you don't wanna buy a set only to find...

Yep. Engine has been out, and in bits.
Before I even bought the van (during my 8 month search for one) I found a NOS set if flat top pistons. Didnt buy them as I didnt know if id end up with a van which already had been over bored. By the time id found a van they had been sold.
When I took my engine apart I found I'm on stock pistons (no surprise at 50,000 miles) so at least I know what I need.
Id like to have done the swap during the initial rebuild but couldnt find any pistons!
The vans had low comp pistons to deal with people wanting to use rubbish fuel. Normal compression car pistons would give me a decent hike on power/torque with no loss of reliability and probably no increase (maybe even decrease) in efficiency.
Would just make it a bit nicer to drive.
(More info than you asked for lol)

Nice to know though!
My problem is I see "Low compression" and my brain goes "BOOOOOOOOOOST!!!!!" - what carbs are on it? Worht adding a low pressure blower instead of flat pistons?

It has a webber ict.
Boost has been mentioned many times (I'm no stranger to conversions).
Id be reasonably tempted to try a supercharger but my main considerations arent loads of power.
The extra 10-15 bhp or whatever and the extea torque will help nicely on hills.
But, I want this van to be as reliable and simple as possible. Fuel economy is already in the low 20's too.
Boost will need complete rethinking of the fuel and ignition systems. The oil systems on these engines arent great either. Starts getting involved and expensive and leaves me with a vehicle thats harder to fix while traveling (its a camper remember, holidays with dogs, I don't need it breaking down!) And even more expensive on fuel than it is now!
The next sensible option (after normal pistons) is lexus V8. If I had anywhere to do the swap id start saving now. Hopefully my next house (next year?) Will have off road parking and I can think about engine swaps.
