Hi
Have been thinking. Rather than try and sell my e46, I'm looking at maybe stripping it for parts instead, nothing wrong with it. But what I want to know is, how do people remove from their drive a car with no wheels and partially stripped? Call a scrappy? Donate it? By the way I have no way of moving it myself via trailer, IF I do decide to srtripp it.

Offer it to the first passing metal collector of the day, they'll be back in half an hour with a few mates to lift the shell onto a transit. Make sure you send the logbook back in with a covering letter saying it has been scrapped.

I did what the chap above suggests, but then got a fine from the DVLA for not using an approved recycling facility (i thought they were). I really struggled to get rid of it as well, noone was interested in coming for it with the low price of scrap.

Don't know why they would send a fine as there is no legal obligation to dispose of scrap in any particular manner. The car could well have been depolluted

Just went on the money advice website and it states the following: "The Scrap Metal Dealers’ Act also means it’s against the law to pay for scrap cars in cash in England and Wales – so don’t trust anyone who tries to pay in cash"
So technically I can't trust the option of someone just taking it away! Booooo!

Shame it's a 2002, otherwise I'd sell it here.

Booooo! Maybe this explains the rise in classic car thefts? That much red tape too pay the owner that they nick them instead!

I wonder how many vehicles are on SORN and forgot about that have long been scrapped. Once on SORN you don't have to renew it as used to be the case.

Booooo! That only refers to taking it into the scrapyard. As an individual you can sell what you want to whomever you want. There is currently a big ish rise in theft with people buying scrapers quoting this rubbish and leaving a cheque (or promising to pay by bank transfer because it's the rules) which obviously bounces but by then they have the car, keys and logbook

Ultimately it could be sold to a private seller who happens to be with a few mates in a van, sooooo, technically, as a seller, would it be noted as scrapped, or would it be down to the buyer?

If you signed over the logbook to the buyer then it's their problem.
I've never heard of anybody being fined for sending in a logbook as scrapped.

If you signed over the logbook to the buyer then it's their problem. I've never heard of anybody being fined for sending in a logbook as scrapped. This was late 2011, one of them scrap cars wanted, cash paid affairs. He came dragged it off, sent off the logbook with a note saying it had been scrapped. Received a letter back asking for the name and address of the authorised recycling centre it had gone to, i simply replied with this fellas address. About 6 weeks later i was hit with a letter demanding £90 for the offence of scrapping a car without the use of an authorised treatment facility. THis was before I was active on any forums so i just paid it with a lot of swearing and went on my way. Still got the fine part of the letter somewhere, had to send the bottom part back with a cheque.

It will still show on the system after it's been destroyed but who cares? Here's one here that was broken for spares. 2015-10-05_09-07-48 by srblythe, on Flickr winched onto a truck and taken away, it's sorn.

A couple of years ago i couldn't get anyone to collect my Opel Monza, so i just chopped it up into small enough pieces to fit into my (wifes) estate car and slowly took it down the tip over a couple of days as i chopped bits off!

The last time i stripped a car i rang the scrapyard and they picked it up
Before you strip it you could call one and see what they would do
If they're an authorised ELV place give them the V5, and if they're not declare it SORN
DVLA would say that is not legit because they would probably say you could clone it with another car. They also, obviously, want their records straight
The reality is, it doesn't come up. If the scrapper / metal recycler doesn't record the VIN (which if they don't take the V5 they won't) the DVLA believe it's in your possession and because SORN doesn't need renewing that's it
The only way it would come up again would be if it re-entered the system in some way by taxing it, driving it, selling it but that's not going to happen, is it?
