Maybe the retro but modern hatch that could be used day to day? But no FWD understeering characteristics involved, instead a long piece of metal plugged into an axle driving the rear wheels ;D I'm just getting annoyed with going straight on in my hatch... So, has anyone owned one of these motors? I think they look great with a big set of superlites on, what are the options, red top? pinto? zetec? xflow...? I wouldn't mind leaving it any where either because they just look very, 'jo bloggs'. Just going through a bad patch with the xsi at the moment, so I'm trying to think of alternatives!

Adam, Despite being a Ford-head, I'd have one of these over a MkI/II Escort any day. I've owned two and they handle just as well, but with no overhang at the rear there's far less chance of ending up in a ditch/wall/hedge etc. But... sourcing parts and panels can be a 'mare. Certainly wouldn't run one as an everyday car anymore. Arfur

Join either the Lotus Sunbeam Owners Club or the Avenger/Sunbeam Owners club. All panels are readily available and there is a shop called retrocar that specialises in these motors. QED does engines and Skip Brown or Deutse Components can do the rest. Put it on the road and everyday is a rally day. Huge fun huger grins and hugest respect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mine is getting 13x10's at the back, fuel injection and megajolt, should be good for 210/220bhp.

Would love one of those. Preferably the 1 litre model, as I could stick an obscene engine in, as well as juicing everything up, without the guilt of destroying a genuine Lotus, plus then I could make the 930cc engine into an insane Imp engine for the Super Imp! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Have you tried slowing down for corners? ;D RWD cars understeer too if you turn-in too aggressively or at too high a speed. A 'rorting' Talbot would be a very cool car to own (That one in your picture looks totally spot-on) But it could end up costing quite a bit of money to turn a base model one into that could keep up with your 106. I would have thought the XSI would have been quite an entertaining little car to drive with all that 'fabled' lift-off oversteer antics

Hi Dan,
Yeah it's just I like the idea of pulling out of junctions sideways, bit of a hooligan ;D
My Xsi is fun in the dry, but lacks a 'wagging tail'! Lift off - not found any where with room incase it goes tits up.
I need an airfield or massive car park!
Do you know what engines these sunbeams can take without too much strain?

Mate had a Lotus with 247 bhp on wide alloys with coilovers & I'd just sum it up as awesome A friend of my cousin had a Ti aswell a fair few years back & that was quick too from what I seen of it.

i had a test drive in a Ti (rallyish car) and it was awsome loved it so quick and the noise from the 40's! couldnt have it in the end as it was on a q plate (been re-shelled) so i couldnt insure it. loverly cars though.

I've seen a few with Rover V8s, and Street Machine did a how-to article on fitting an Essex V6 which was virtually a bolt in swap. A lot of the suspension appears to be interchangeable with Ford stuff.
I read somewhere recently that the Avenger (which it was based on) is actually a lighter car.
