Hi everyone,
Been lurking a while here, great forum. I thought I had a username at some point and posted my old supercharged mx5 but anyway...
I'm looking to import a 70s datsun from the states as they seem to have relatively rust free cars which are reasonably priced.
I understand that pre 76 cars are tax free so am aiming for that.
If I were to do an engine swap from a much newer vehicle how would that affect the classic status and also do I need to worry about emissions in an mot?
Also if I want to convert to rhd, should I do it first in stock form then crack on with swap after?
I want to have a plan in place before I start the import process but am really excited to get on with it.
Thanks in advance, Frank

Get it registered first while it's still standard to avoid potential pitfalls. Then modify away but remember the 8 point rule and don't cut the monocoque.

Cheers. Having just read that it's quite strict isn't it.
In theory of course, how strict are they in picking up on this once it's been registered?

It all depends on what you do, basically as long as you don't cut the shell about you should be ok once it is already registered and in the historic (free road tax) class. The DVLA have been having a clamp down on modified stuff though so it's better to stay within the rules.

Every Datsun rusts, it's the way they were made. What Datsun are you looking at? Don't register the engine swap. My Hillman Imp was never registered with the engine swap, never thought about it until now actually.

I'd like a 620. Was thinking sr20 for a while but actually I think a mk3 mx5 could be great donar for running gear. Would it have to pass emission in an mot?

Only for the age of the vehicle, I think it's just no dense smoke at that age.

A 620 SR20 conversion would be too easy, the sound terrible and you could buy the parts new to do the conversion. KA24E to keep it in the family. VQ, 4AG, F20, 13b (my choice) have all been done. Although the original L4 L16/L18/L20 tuned on DCOE carbs sounds amazing, I'll take all the old bits you don't want for my growing collection of L4 parts. No need to worry about the MOT, just get the car purchased and shipped over.

I agree sr20 wouldn't suit it.
I like the idea of an na car which is why I was thinking the duratec in the mx5. Plus you get lsd and great handling (potentially) for about 2k. F20c is way way to expensive and that's just the engine. 13b scares me but I do love the idea of a rowdy rotary.
Am open to ideas though and will def keep you updated when I get it sorted

I have a 1965 vehicle which has an engine fitted from a 2001 vehicle. All correctly registered.
I still retain my tax free status and the mot (from what my tester has told me) is run as per the testing standards relevant to the vehicle age and not the engine age.
However this may be wrong, you'd want to read the MOT standards though to be certain.
