I sold my 2.5 T4 about 6 years ago and I've regretted it ever since. So Ive been looking to buy another, however anything with a Vw badge on it seems to be commanding stupid money lately. A member on here was kind enough to point me in the direction of a T4 for sale....for £500. I was sold straight away. Its a 2.4 with a snapped camshaft. That alone was good enough for me. It then transpired that it was an 8 seater Caravelle. Done, money sent. Then I found out its only got 89k on the clocks!!!!! Only issue was it was in Lowestoft. So I arranged a delivery driver and £320 later it was delivered to my drive. Here she is -

I was told that the camshaft had snapped and a piston had a hole in it. The van came with the cylindr head in the back. The head has been partially stripped. No holes in the pistons, just the usual indents for valve clearance. The barrels have been allowed to sit with water in them so reckon it might be scrap.

Interior was a little bit grubby so I gave it a good hoover and fitted the seats that came loose inside. I will change the carpet for black at a later date

So after a quick wash, I started my favourite excercise....Cutting and polishing All done by hand with a waffle sponge and a bottle of Meguiars ultimate compound. One of these days I must get myself a machine polisher before I end up with arms like popeye.

So the plans-
Clean and tidy interior but retain the Caravelle layout.
Maybe upgrade the old early bumpers to later spec
Ditch the naff immobiliser and alarm that has been retro fitted.
Find some better wheels.
Engine- Have done plenty of research and the 2.5tdi fitted to these is also fitted to the Volvo V70. In the T4 it comes in 88 and 102bhp. In the Volvo it has 140bhp (before remapping). So the plan is to source a V70 engine (code d5252t)a new wiring loom and Ecu and then I'll need the gearbox from a 2.5tdi.
Sounds easy on paper.
Either way, I love it already. And to think, theres a guy on ebay right now selling just the tailgate for £450...and its battered.

Originally from Rackheath near Norwich, could give you the name of the road but that's about it. Second owner was who you bought it off.
Can I just add..that looks so much better already.

Todays progress. Ive finished cutting the paintwork below the roof line and my arms are dead. I think I'm going to beg, steal or borrow an electric polisher to do the roof. The vans verry shiny but its highlighted a few paint variations. I reckon, even with just 90k on the clocks, the old girls been no stranger to the paint shops. Oh well its all "patina".
I charged the battery last night and all the electrics work. Tried the starter and the engine turns over (no head attached)

That looks a real bargain, if bores of your engine are ok, might it be easier to just swap over the Volvo top end? Is yours a 2.4 or 2.5? Mine is a 2.4 which is supposed to be slow, but I don't seem to have any problems keeping up with traffic and 30mpg on veg means its cheap to run. Just roll along enjoying the views. Ttfn glenn

Mines a 2.4. Its going to be my daily driver so I need it to have a bit of poke. I could handle it being slow if it was just for cruising to the coast in the summer.
From what I've read, the Volvo head and the vw 2.5 head don't match the 2.4 block. I think the oil or water passages are different.
I'm looking at "whipping" the block and gearbox out now. Lol. Not sure how at the moment. Took a Corsa engine out a few months ago and it was tiny compared to this lot. Looked like a little sewing machine compared to this big unit.

The 1.9 tdi golf motor might be another option for a replacement power source, personally I find the 2.4 perfectly adequate, you could rebuild the top end of your existing motor, try it, and if you find it lacking then strap a turbo on. There's lots of info on tuning and modification over on the t4 forum. Ttfn Glenn

I did look at the 1.9tdi. But by the time Ive sourced the engine and gearbox (2.4 box geared all wrong) then the turbo manifold and other bits, I might aswell just put the bigger, more powerful 2.5 in.
At least, now I know the engine turns over freely, I might be able to sell it and the head to part fund the new unit.
Spoke to a guy on ebay selling the whole V70 unit and injectors for £450.

So a bit of progress these last few weeks. Have sold the old head a fuel pump a started taking out the wiring loom. Have labelled every connector that Ive removed. I bought a new loom for a 2.5tdi and it came. Holy monkey the new loom has a lot of connectors. Ive worked through it, with the help of several books and diagrams on the T4 forum. Once you get your head around the fact that the most VWs from 95 on had the same connectors at the fuse box, its not too bad. I just hope I can configure them to the Volvo unit. Anyway today this happened-
