Sounds like very positive news. From experience, the best way to change the front to rear pipes on a P38 involves dropping the tank out, as they're routed above it. I can't remember if there's an access panel under the back seat (part of me thinks yes) for the tank unit, but I do recall the filler neck being fairly easily disconnected.
Vague memory also makes me think it's beneficial to remove the wheel arch liner on the O/S/F as the pipes are either up behind it, or access is much improved if you do.
Glad to hear you're enjoying it.

I think an update is about due. First, it hasn't broken down! (yet) It does however have a horrendous leak on the air suspension system meaning that every time I stop for more than a couple of minutes I have to wait ten minutes for the air pump to refill the system. The leak is from the valve block that I rebuilt previously. Turns out that there are a few variations of the rebuild kit and the kit containing orange o-rings, the kit I used, is the worst for poor fit and subsequent leaks. This means that the compressor is being over-worked and considering it was rebuilt from the same kit is probably also now goosed. So I have found a trusted supplier through the forums and ordered another rebuild kit for both valve block and pump and this one also comes with fresh desiccant for the air-dryer. Cost -£80 delivered. I have had time to find the odd other age related foible commensurate with a 21 year old vehicle but nothing worth mentioning other than the vandalism of some of the wiring loom with scotchlocks when the carphone was installed. I will be taking the dash out to free off the heater blend motors so will have a good purge of the wiring then. I'm also eyeing up a double din android head unit for music and sat-nave duties. This is an increasingly popular mod on these as many come with a reversing camera function as well and can be programmed to the original steering wheel controls. With mine having the premium Harmon Kardon sound system I need an adapter to allow fitment of an aftermarket head unit to make the output compatible with the various amplifiers dotted around the vehicle. Oh look, more scotchlocks! I also found this little fella floating around in there (it's not as fuzzy in real life): Which I suspect is supposed to be linked to this: Which I believe is the cabin temp feedback sensor for he cabin conditioning system (HEVAC). Had a decent run out in her at the weekend, she behaved herself impeccably and really was a pleasure to drive. A different pace of life to the cars and a great views of the countryside over the hedges.

Just caught up with this thread, nice to the P38 getting some love at last My last 1 was a diesel, bought from this very forum no less! Bought for a good price with an Abs fault and a propshaft issue, which turned out to be an oversize mounting hole for the abs sensor and a slipping transfer chain in the transfer box Otherwise the car had been fantastically maintained by its overseas owner, who kept it stored in an underground car park apart from his yearly visit to the UK Lovely thing to waft around in Definitely have another but only if it came with a Hawkeye code reader.....

Smiler: You might find this months Practical Classics magazine interesting. There is an article about someone who bought two P38's that had a number of problems which he sorted out.

Superb motors, although I may be a tad biased. But yes, a RR specific reader is a must. My Nanocom was expensive in terms of up-front cost, but what it's saved me in time, faf and the cost of listening to "specialists" is incalculable.

Thanks for the positive replies folks. I shall take a look at Practical Classics next time I'm in Tescos and if the articles still in there I shall pick a copy up. There was supposed to be a small article in Practical Performance Car magazine last month about someone buying one of these but it ended up on the cutting room floor.

Tiny update: Currently have the dashboard and center console partially dismantled to allow removal of the 'professionally fitted' telephone and to tape up the joints in the air ducting. I still have a slight air leak from the suspension system valve block but it's liveable with for now. I am currently on the lookout for one of these: The Range Rover finally made its public debut in the mag earlier this month too. If the next article gets published it'll contain a bit more work on it. Regards, Smiler.

Oh dear... Remember how I replaced the accessories drive belt whilst I had the radiator out? Well today that nice new belt failed leaving me with no water pump, no power steering and no alternator. I have checked all affected pulleys and accessories and all are free to rotate and appear to be in correct alignment so at the moment it appears to be a straight belt failure. Extremely irritating and again not directly attributable to the P38 as this could happen to any vehicle.

Balls! I hate it when proactive maintenance bites you - I had the same on my P6 a while ago.
I changed the PAS belt because it was donkeys years old (but still fully functional) only for the new one to start squealing like a stuck pig after a couple of months, leading me to change it again for a different brand of belt...

A pain but at least an easy fix.
Mine's being a very naughty girl at the moment, with not such an easy resolution.
I'll update my thread after I've scrubbed up and operated tomorrow.
Needless to say, I need another load of brake fluid. 😞

UpdateThanks to a productive weekend with a group meet at a fellow owners workshop I now have a sag-less head-lining. Which means I can now also close the sun-roof blind. All the pillar trims were also replaced with cleaner better wearing versions from a later model. Smiler.

Apparently the two items in the photo below are rare as hens teeth. I found both in a local(ish) breakers. The battery cover was hiding in the front passenger footwell under the partially dismembered glovebox. The sunroof key was found in the rear footwell.

I didn't know that, but it was on a private plate and was registered just prior to my ownership. Don't know if that changes anything?
