Hi! Step by step.... Pressure washed the front suspension, the gearbox and the radiator. Testfit for the single Optima battery, normally there are two 6 Volt units serially connected. Tight fit behind the grille... Optima battery's are the best you can buy.....they last much longer than others. This one is 21 years old and has still 80% of the quoted power. Greet

Guten Morgen! The underseal/paint under the front wings is finished..... Remove the sill cover (8 screws)....showed a lot of welding done on the inner sill. But it's ok. The floor.....a lot of rust....but solid.Only some small patches needed.... Move the engine back from work to my garage for final assembly. Ready .... Get some parts back from Zinc plating.... Fit the cover on the head..... The pedalbox.....shiney! Clean gearbox! Puh....hope you not get bored of this stuff.... Thanks for looking. Greet

Hi! Today i thought of doing some things on the engine.Like working on engines much more than remove underseal or welding....! So i wanted to fit the cylinderliners first... But the repro-rubberseal does NOT fit!Tryed to fit the liners with some tricks but they are not made to OE specification.Called the shop where they came from this afternoon, they said i should send them back for inspection. So,i worked on the floors this afternoon instead on the engine. Did some welding on the seat mountings and painted the lot in the end. Cheers

Hi! retrolegends :There is always time for my girlfriend! It's only a matter of time-management. And i have 2 cats, too! Yesterday i get the right rubber seals for the liners.Time to get the engine back together. But.....next problem .The pistons will not fit into on the first oil control ring.To tight. Looks like the groove is not deep enough for this kind of ring.So i looked on the old pistons....there is another typ of ring. Engine in boxes....surprise,surprise! I changed the ring for the old one and the pistons fit! Maybe it will burn a little oil....but who cares? Budget is tight....a little. Now the new bearings..... The front main bearing is a single piece typ and the thrust bearing at the same time. But here i have to rework the endplay..... Hope in the end the engine runs sweet....! Schönen Abend!

Great project. How do the liners fit? Do they just slide in and get clamped down by the head?

rollingcoal:Parts are easy to get.But if you want repairpanels it gets a bit worse.... For brakes, engine and suspension the most is available. In France it is still a very popular car but in germany there are only a few.And they are not expensive. The people overhere want more VW's and Merc's..... Not me! Cheers

Interesting thread. My father had a South African built 404 wagon for many years which had a number of distinctive design peculiarities. The strange porting of the head, the torque tube - stuff like that. Although there are clear differences too, like the 404 using double coils at the rear and McPherson struts at the front, the family relationship is clear.
The whole family is tough and well engineered. Ours did 200k in demanding conditions with minimal maintenance before being sold to be a taxi.......

vitesseefi The engine was and is a very good one.Early 404 had still that engine in. I heard from engines that run 400k without problems.... Cheers

Pretty sure ours was a 1.8. Was 1974 built - pretty sure RSA production went on well after European production finished, but even so it must have been one of the last. First car I ever drove, it a had a very strange column change gearshift and you never quite knew what gear you were going to get next......
He had a 504 wagon after. The mechanicals were still good but the bodywork and trim fell apart quite quickly.
