Have you got a base map sorted so the car runs? Do you have a wideband O2 sensor installed and working?

TBH I'd wait until you have the wideband in, you can log where the holes are in the map easier then, once you see these you'll be able tp drag the tables where you need to to get the stoichiometry right.

Even with the load tables it can be tricky to do!
A friend of mine tried mapping his car himself thinking it would be easy. After all he had a wideband, a base map and the internet told him it would be easy. He could not iron out alot of random issues with the car. The engine almost never ran consistantly right.
A good tuner? Done in around 1/2 a day with there being a near night and day difference. It's one of our own with a Rover 216i running a turbocharged Honda engine ; he initially tried mapping it without the turbo but eventually got that done elsewhere. Another friend of mine with a Beetle running a Subaru 2.5T engine found similar results.
There are mapping courses available which from what I understand help alot more than you think. The bloke with the Beetle did this and picked up on more than he realised.
While I know the basics of mapping of above and have done a little (more of the altering) I am aware that I playing a little with guesswork.

My brother updated his E30 management to megasquirt had lots of running issues and ended up getting it set up by someone else
I'm currently trying to map my engine swop (stand alone) I thought it would be easy but I was so wrong the more you look into it the more involved it gets so I'm now booking it in to be done

Could I map my Audi 80 or is it too old? I've just done a 1996 A4 B5 avant, it is too early to be mapped via a plug in cable, so yours will be the same I'd think. Usually with 80s and early A4s they need chipped instead. I was getting quotes of £300 to get a chip swap. They are soldered in so need to be done by someone who knows what they are doing. I imported my own chip from the Czech Republic for £30 and then paid £25 to have it fitted.

yes, or fitting a programmable ecu.
or taking the vehicle to someone like wayne schofield who will socket the board, create a map and write it onto a chip that just pushes in.

Peterborough area Mine came from an eBay seller, it's made by powerchips in the Czech Republic. I spent weeks searching and this is the only one I could find anywhere in the world. There are plenty of plug in type power boxes on eBay but everyone on the Audi forum told me to avoid these, all they do is fool the ecu into sending more fuel in which gives only small gain and throws tons of black smoke out. I got lucky and someone local put me in touch with Form automotive who are an hour from me in West Yorkshire who charged a very reasonable £25 to remove my ecu from the car, pull my ecu apart, unsolder the existing chip and solder in the new one. It took about one hour to do. I think I was lucky to get it done at such a good price. Also on my 1996 A4 there are a few different chips, so I had to pull the ecu apart, write down the chip numbers, and email the fella in the Czech Republic so he could match it with his numbers and send me the correct chips. I've took a screen shot of the sellers name if you want to contact him. Also just as an example I've took a shot of all the chip codes just to show you how many there can be just for the AFN engine in my car. To be honest it was a fair amount of hassle, finding someone who had a chip for my car, then getting it shipped over and fitted, but it was so worth it, best £55 I've ever spent and it's made a big difference to my car.
