Serious commuting is something I've managed to avoid for quite some time but as they say 'all good things and all that....
So, I don't want to stick a load of miles on my BM, the land rover is needed elsewhere so I'm looking at a cheap yet reliable bit of fun to do 2 hours driving a day. However, I can't stand 'normal' looking stuff and it's a push to get me to sit in anything recent. Here's some criteria:
£3000 max really. Luxury bits like leather etc. Reliable with good parts availability. Bearable mpg around 30-35ish Would prefer non CAT NO DIESEL Around 2.0L Must be respectable unfortunately.
Give me some ideas, I keep getting dragged to an S type and can't get those 5 cylinder bugs out of my head! I have a couple of months to play with... HELPPP!

for that kind of mileage, it has to be diesel.

for that kind of mileage, it has to be diesel. or move house. Not necessarily, I do just over 300 miles a week in a CLK200 and that's getting 32-36 MPG a week.

I use to do 80 miles a day in my old BMW e28 518. She didn't miss a beat and returned half decent mpg.

Well an important question is, can you afford to run a 30 to 35 mpg petrol for whatever miles you're doing? If so, lots of things come to mind.

I don't think an S-Type would touch that MPG though, my diesel only ever did on a motorway only run and you can't get a 2.0 ltr petrol.

Yes, fuel is not an issue, I just don't want to be visiting the petrol station every day as I can't be arsed. It only needs to be around 2L...Above or below is no problem. It's mainly A road stuff so achieving a constant 63.7mph to achieve 41.8mpg probably won't be possible!
Edit: It's 92 miles total round trip.

A smaller exec may get you decent mpg in petrol guise?
X type Lexus IS200 BMW 318i (E36/E46) Merc 190/C180 Audi 80/A4 Saab 900/9-3
Edit: I had a 2001 Audi A3 1.6 a few years ago and me and my wife still miss that car. Never missed a beat, was swift enough and looked nice, if a little boring! We've had much "better" and newer cars since but this still sticks in the mind.

Not really suggesting a particular car but I do about a hundred miles a day in my xr3i. Parts and such like are cheap, mpg is 30-35 bit I drive a lot in london so generally get 30mpg. but no leather. I also had an mr2 that would do 30mpg+ on my 100mile a day commute and that had leather and a t bar roof! Parts were a bit more awkward but it was a Toyota so not much to replace. The mr2 and xr3i both had circa 70k miles on them when i got then and where generally looked after but not restored. So in summary I'd go for a relatively low mileage something late 80s early nineties as parts are still available they will do 30mpg + and you should get a fair bit of change from £3k for spending on sorting out things which will be tired on a 25/30year old car (alternators, radiators, water hoses, brake hoses etc)

Those is200's are uber cheap with low miles. Don't know anything about them though... Much research to be done... Cheers fellas, I am getting a short list going. I'd love an older 80's motor but I just think I'd knock the curse word out of it on a regular basis. My BM would have it but it's done it's time working and I don't want it to be poked up the by someone half asleep on the phone.

E36
Reliable, everyday usable, plentiful parts, yet pretty retro.

An healthy BMW E36/E46 323/325i should do around 33mpg on A-roads without trying.
Peugeot 406 is both a good steer as comfortable. Or a Alfa-Romeo 156 does still look special.
Volvo 850 is probably a worthy candidate for your list.

Xr3i did cross my mind. I've had my fair share of cvh lumps. Got too used to cow skin and soft furnishings unfortunately.
I got rid of my e36 touring and regretted it, what's worse is I sold it to a friend and still see it most days. I'm interested in an e30 320i or similar, money is on the limit though for a decent one.

If you're driving alone what about a couple of months of open top motoring in an old mx5, streetka, barchetta, or something like that.

I'd go: Octavia Estate SF5 Forester Volvo V50
(all wagons, all can be got cheap and all have comfy leather mile-eating versions). Forester probably thirsty but so are the T5 Ovlovs.

Vr6 corrado, 3k will get you a decent one with leather. Pretty reliable mechanically but they can have electrical gremlins. A bit more than 2.0l and I doubt the fuel economy will hit those heights if you have a heavy right foot but the noise from them makes up for it. Values will only go up too so your likely to get your purchase price back if you sell on in a few years.

I do about 40 miles a day in a 2.0xt sp5 forester. Wouldn't say it's the best on fuel, high 20's at 65-70 on a34, I'm still calculating really because we haven't had it long, can't get used to sticking £40 in and it only reading half a tank when that used to brim our old polo but it's a comfy thing that's "interesting" to me at least, way cheaper to insure than an Impreza that's for sure when it's very similar underneath. I've got a smallish engined motorbike so when I'm feeling cheap I ride that I'd suggest a volvo with a 5 cylinder or another vote for is200 because they're cheap

My Saab 9-5 Aero Hirsch does high 30s on a run and between 28-32 pottering about, massively comfortable too and heated leather for the winter months.

My MK1 Octavia VRS has a petrol 1.8 20vT motor and hits 40mpg on a steady run. 180bhp standard. Comfy. Leather interior. Parts are cheap as chips (front discs and pads came to about £70 all in and took me less than an hour to do). Easy to service and maintain. Munches the miles. Ugly. But goes well. Not much you can do to jazz it up though LOL She's always gonna be ugly.
Get yourself an earlier Audi S6 V8 and straight pipes. You'll never, ever get bored of that tune!
