What do people think of them? I think they're really bland boring and cheap. Seem to tick all the right boxes. I'm particularly interested in the Turbo model as insurance is suprisingly cheap and I think it'd make an awesome sleeper!! ;D 1.7 Turbo Engine Producing 120hp at 0.3 bar, which is hardly and boost especially as the engine is really well developed and easily takes a lot more power. £85 can get ecu remapped and 170bhp!! Seem to Rot around rear arches and a lot are automatics. Plans would be to lower it and wheel change (4x100??) then all the rest of my energies could be spent mechanically. Inspirational pictures are non-existant

I think those arches would lend themselves to a lot of dish, being as how they are so big. Get the turbo one and make it look like the base model and you are away!

Think the early ones suffered electrical gremlins IIRC, not aware of any other issues TBH.
Different...and cheap.
Don't think I've ever seen a modified one, so I think that would make you a pioneer!!!

With them being 4x100(??) wheels would be geet easy!!
And with more and more people transferring the engines into renaults more stuff for the engine is becoming available. Its just trying to find a Manual one!

2.0 ones absolutely go like f*ck and have interesting handling. I`ve never thought manual ones hard to find although its a few months since I had a 440 in. About this time last year I had 4 in at once and three were manual. Top of the range one gets the crazy segmented dash computer!

Its the turbo one that seems to be hard to find in Manual. The 2.0 GLT is also a contender but really i want a Turbo again ;D

I can imagine the Turbo being hard to find as a manual, I`ve never seen one at all. GLT is great fun.

There is one on Ebay which is manual but guy wants to swap I'm sure he'd accept cash if really pushed. As i recall cash can be used to buy other cars...

Ran a 1.8 manual for a while and it was a cracking little car. Handling was more unremarkable than bad as I recall.

one of my flat mate at uni has one, very dull but it seems very reliable and cheap to insure doesnt the turbo engine fit in 340's? that would be a much better way to go

I have a hankering for a 480. The 440/460s just seem plain.

The dull tag only really applies to the auto, the manual version is a horse of a different colour, especially in 2.0 form, if you don`t know what to expect the acceleration will snap ya neck! (well ok if youre used to driving a V8 Cortina or something then it wont but if if you get out of a Megane 1.4 and into a 440 2.0 GLT look you know what I mean)

i had a 2.0 se 440 a few years ago, lots of toys for the cash, electric everything, heated seats etc.
very fast, handling was boat like tho, and yes understeer-a-rama, however high speed lift off oversteer was also a trait(frightening)
i only bought the 440 because it was cheaper to insure than the 480 i wanted.

Everything is available for them. Bilstein Suspension (-40mm) and decent tyres will surely help the handling! I like the fact they're so dull!

I'm reading this with great interest as I can have one of these cars if I want it. Its a facelift hatchback model with a 1.6 lump. I have to say the gearbox is nasty to use, the engine is rather coarse and its not a great handler. All of which can be sorted, someone find some images so I can finally get enthusiastic about this silver top special. I saw this horror a few years ago. Let assume this is not the way to go.

I had a 480 Turbo (coupe version as I am sure you are aware ) either way the all the 400 are basically the same. I would recommend them, handling as people has said is a bit sloppy, but no worse than most 80's FWD cars. Parts are a bit steep from Volvo, but ebay and the 480 europe forum are a mine of cheap engine spares. I had Rich Mod on mine, the £80 for 170 BHP you mentioned before, mine was a bit tired so was down on power but it was very quick car IMO. Best cash I ever sent on a car! De-cat also releases quite a bit of power and makes the turbo spool up quicker. I had a manual but a Auto turbo's can be very entertaining too! A guy on the 480 europe forum ran 215BHP in his Auto 480 turbo. IIRC he had a T25 turbo, 940 injectors, 3 bar MAP sensor and a custom Rich Mod map. Either way for pound per horse power, its hard to beat. £500 will get you a decent manual 440/460 Turbo (might require some digging around though), £80 for Rich Mod, de-cat it and go 'n' bait some RS turbos ;D
