Hi all, anyone got any advice for working out what I can squeeze under my arches? I'm aiming to get my wheels banded up next week, and I wanted to know if anyone's got a fool-proof method of measuring up what the backspacing and total width can be?

not a lot you can do but get out there with a tape measure and see what clearance you have currently, then work out what can be done. www.willtheyfit.com is an useful tool

also, some detail about the vehicle will help massively, most likely someone out there will have deciced to put silly wheels on the same vehicle at some point and will have an idea what will fit.

Banding will be outside lip only I imagine so wont change the inner clearances at all. measure off the existing wheel hub face or from the back of the wheel face thru the centre bore and add on the amount you think will work for you.

Good thinking welshpug. It's a capri 2.8, and I'm going to stretch the wheels out to 8" on the front, and 10" on the rear if I can make it fit. They're 16" pug steels, and I know that a few folks have made these fit. Going to be a bit tight on the back though! I never considered that they might just get the front face done, but it makes sense now I think about it sausage. I was measuring it all up as if the centres would come out, and then the rims get widened and the centres replaced where they'd best fit. I'm not only doing it for the look of the thing. It's got a 24v cossie lump in it, and I'm building a hotted-up one to replace the tired on in it at the moment, so I'd quite like as much width as possible, to try to keep some of the grunt on the pavement. I was imagining gaining about an inch inside and a few on the outside. I suppose it's down to how the chap who does the banding prices his work. Still waiting on a reply from him though.

Going to be quite a bit more expensive to move the centres. I'd probably have to charge nearly double I reckon.
To measure you just need to lay a straight edge on the face of the wheel and eye it up with a tape measure. Generally I found if the rim of the wheels is flush with the edge if the arch then all is well when you come to put the tyres on assuming you use sensible tyre sizes. Once they start to poke out you have to go for stretch and it all gets a bit tricky to work out.

I'm not a fan of the leaning sidewall thing, it looks like you can't find proper tyres. I guess that only banding the outside makes the whole process easier too, as what's at the back of the wheel stays the same, so I can start working breaks etc out before they get banded.
