My mate has a trike with a Beetle engine, until he said it got hot and wouldn't work. We started pulling the engine apart the other day and as I was removing the barrels on one side of the engine I found the main reason why it stopped working. The piston came out with the barrel - at least what was left of it. Nice twist on the conrod... Amazingly nothing has gone through the block, although I am expecting some form of carnage in there once we get it apart...  |

Tell him not to worry, when it's fixed, it will have all of its huge torque & massive 30 odd horses back.

Just a thought - a few DIY aeroplanes use a "half VW" engine. You might want to read up and see if it's simple to run with half removed   |

You might want to read up and see if it's simple to run with half removed way back in the late 70,s had a bay window camper rusty even then! clambering up the hill out of marlborough to the m4, it just died no noise nothing would turn over but not start,after checking it found carb empty and fuel pump not working, rigged up a gallon can of fuel in the back gravity feed to the carb, it fired up but only on 2 cylinders,wife and kids back in, chugged oof on our way to wallinford, it got there albeit slowly, got home and the following morning went out with tools and started more check, no compression on 2 cylnders, pulled the lump out and found it had broken the crank!hence no fuel pump, but sparkes so yes it wi run on half an engine ! |
