It is with deep regret that I am offering my 1981 Mercedes Benz W126 S class 280SE Auto up for grabs, but I've decided to save for a deposit on a house.
The price has been dropped as the car needs a thermostat and I don't have anywhere to store the car.
The car is believed to be the earliest surviving example, sporting wind down windows, no central locking and no sunroof.
The history with this car, as the pictures show, is mind boggling. Every MOT certificate is present, as well as a selection of tax discs, and many other receipts, including one for a pair of brand new wings supplied by Mercedes Benz.
The bodywork on the Merc is lovely, the only minor imperfections are a very small chip in the boot, and a scrape (paint scrape only, no dents) on the passenger side wheel arch. My plan was to get these 2 little bits painted to get the car 100% mint. I got quoted around £150 to get both bits done.
The engine is a 2.8 straight 6, which has recently benefited from a full stainless steel system. The oil pressure is always good, the fan kicks in as and when it should and there are no nasty bangs, whines or funny noises from either the engine or automatic gearbox, it changes gear as and when it should and drives smoothly. Whenever I use the car I always let it idle and warm up before using it.
If I was to be picky, I'd point out that the drivers door lock is temperamental since the cold weather, (I'm going to stick some grease in to see if it free's the mechanism up), and there is a slight shudder from the brakes under heavy braking; it had pads and discs recently, but it had been in storage for a year, i suspect it is sticky caliper sliders so I was going to strip and clean the calipers. The mileage is showing 73,720, which may rise slightly as it gets used now and again.
The interior, as you can see, is immaculate. The seats haven't lost their bounce, the dash isn't cracked or split and the steering wheel still has its texture. It still has the original 'Becker Europa' radio, but has been adapted from an auxiliary input which allows you to play your phone/MP3/iPod music through the car, but retain the factory interior look. It also still has the original Mercedes Benz first aid kit in the rear parcel shelf compartment!
The wheels are 14" Mexican hat alloys, which have recently benefited from a refurb. They aren't the original wheels for the car, but they suit it down to the ground, and the original wheel trims are in the boot if you wish to change them over.
I'm looking for offers is the region of £3,600. I'd consider doing a deal on another car, maybe a swap, possibly a mk1/2 fiesta, an escort, a Granada etc, but try me! The car is located in Sunderland, and viewing is highly recommended. I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking, thanks for looking!
