Interested in a Mazda MX3 1.6 i in fact a car i know nothing about except what i read on google. Wondered if any members have owned one in the past ? The write ups sound good but they are no substitute for practical experience of ownership Thanks

A friend of mine had an mx3 with the little 1.8 V6, i'm lead to believe it was the smallest mass produced V6..? Anyway, lovely little car and quick in that form. Interior was a bit oppressively black and dark but it was well nailed together. Bodywork less so, there seems to be a lot of rust traps around the suspension towers both front and rear. Rot in the sills and rear arches is easier to spot. His ended up being made of curse word patches and filler so he painted it matt black and eked out the last few months from it.

If you go for one, go for a v6. Make sure it has had a belt change, as that isn't cheap and make sure it doesn't burn any oil as they can be thirsty on oil. It is a sweet sounding engine and pulls the mx3 along well. As previously mentioned check carefully for rot. Suspension and wishbone mounts points can rust badly. Rear arches rot. If you can find a rot free example, it is a great little chassis. For a front wheel drive car the handling is nice and sharp. This era of mazda was grat if you like drivers cars. There is a very nice 323f for sale on here. OK it isn't an mx3, but it is an equally good drivers car, hugely practical and not a bad looker either.

^ yep, wasn't mentioned that MX3 was a 323 'coupe' & they were basically the same underneath depending upon engine choices.

Finally got the Mazda mx3 which is the 1.6 version luckily just had cam belt / water pump / clutch / new flywheel / brakes all round and many smaller parts. Needs a front window electric switch which i can source and just a small area of rust on one wheel arch / rest of car structual condition is good and 123000 on clock. Seem to think some mx 5 parts might be compatible especially wheels share same specs but need to read more on other bits. On a 50 mile trip home very good / water temp never moved and engine performed good but early days in retro land.
