So the RRG17 section has been created so time for the Hill climb thread to be started
Point 1 - I will edit this post with any clarification as a result of questions raised as well as answering any questions directly in the thread
Point 2 - Both morning and afternoon sessions will be sold in advance of the event
Point 3 - Rules/requirements for 2017 are same as 2016
Driver/Vehicle rules/requirements
Pre 1992 preferred but we are flexible in terms of late registered models where they were manufactured before 1992.
Variety is the spice of life - this is clearly demonstrated in AB Car Pix photos below
Cars must be road registered and insured (MOT if required). All Documentation will be required on the day.
Insurance - will accept Certificate or Covernote or a print from ASK MID - Click here
MOT - will accept paper Certificate or a print off from Gov.co.uk MOT checker - Click here
Driving Licence - Will Accept Photocard or Old Paper Style - if you have lost or miss-laid either then you can get print out (screen print) from DL Check - Click Here To access DL info you do need Driving licence number, National Insurance Number and Post Code
Note - VED - Now there is no requirement to legally display VED we aren't going to request proof for that - if you drove to the event it's pretty clear you should have it.
Once those have been checked - you will have to sign an indemnity and then attend drivers briefing before the start.
Co-drivers (people sharing driving a car) Need to just show DL and proof of insurance cover at same time as driver books in, sign an indemnity and attend drivers briefing before the start.
No noise limit, we've had ex F1 cars run as well as unsilenced hill climbers
Hill climb applications
We plan to start the process inlate May or very early June we actually started middle of May so all good there.
Applications via the forum - information is here
We are doing a two stage email application this year
From initial application details which are
Your name
Details of the car (type, modifications, anything interesting we should know)
Pictures of the car (showing reg number) BiAS you so made me laugh complying with that request
Which session you would prefer, Morning or Afternoon
Where you heard about the booking process (eg RR Forum, Facebook, Instagram etc)
We reply back either offering a space and requesting further contact details or declining the request
This is because last year quite a few offers of sessions with payment instructions were never answered - possibly due to my replies going into spam and it was only when I reconciled the payments that I realised there was a problem with a few people I’d offered spaces too. Chasing up those spaces resulted in some people being quite frustrated because they hadn't apparently heard from us and assumed no reply is a no.
There is no requirement for participants to be on club stands.
Last year we had several entries for the morning session where participants didn't have a club stand to go to when the morning session finished and there were some concerns about retro parking being full - in theory there should be 50 or so spaces somewhere because the afternoon participants would be lined up waiting to come in but that's a bit wishy washy so we made an easy decision to allow morning participants to leave their cars parked up in the paddock and they could enjoy the rest of the show in the afternoon without worrying about finding a parking space. The only drawback was we made it clear they would have to be a little bit patient when the wanted to leave if it was before 5pm as we'd have to facilitate their exit from a live paddock.
We also had several entries for the afternoon where participants didn't have a space on a club stand and asked if they could park up in the paddock early, we coped with that - they did however have to arrive at the same time as the morning participants (a full hour before the show opens)
Now I know we would struggle if all 60 afternoon cars wanted to arrive before the show opens and park up in the paddock and equally if all 60 morning session participants wanted to stay in the paddock after the morning session was over but the exceptions tend to be exceptions and not the norm
Bottom line is we try to accommodate most things where possible, all it takes is a polite request after a successful application has been made - ie just keep the dialogue going and we find a way to fix things so everyone is happy.
Passengers
Passengers - just need to sign an indemnity and do not need to attend drivers briefing.
One passenger max per car. Children are allowed provided they are able to be secured in the seat belts.
Guest Cars
Guest cars are not subject to the same rules as RWYB entries - they are normally competition cars that are subject to a much higher level of scrutiny/checks
Helmets
Helmets are mandatory (please bring your own if you have one). There are helmets to hire but will require £50 deposit (refunded on return).
Trailered Vehicles
by negotiation in advance of application, because we have a limited space and trailer logistics can be a nightmare.
Paddock Opening
Paddock opens 1 hr before normal gate opens so we can get the hill climb running on the stroke of 9am (so paddock will be open from 8am).
Paddock will be opened for Afternoon session cars at the Lunch time interval - This break is flexible depending on the finishing time of the morning session - could be anywhere from midday to 1pm.around and depends on when the morning session is finished -
Afternoon Drivers and passengers can sign on in the paddock area (Information Hut) at anytime during the morning - we just ask that you don't try to sign on before 9am as we will be trying to finish of the morning session people.
We will have an area at the edge of the "show field" set aside for assembly ready for the afternoon session - There will be a sign identifying where cars need to be so people are clear when and where they need to be to be ready for changeover. We will collect and bring in all the cars at the same time and once staged in the paddock all drivers will then go to the drivers briefing (hopefully an improvement of last year)
1. Sign on open all morning - please sign on before lunch
2. Assemble cars from 1200 at the assembly point
3. We'll come and get you when we are ready to get you into the paddock and we'll bring you all in together
4. When you are in the paddock and parked - go to the black Barn by the start line for the briefing which will be held shortly after
How many runs will I get?
As many runs as we can get you in the morning or afternoon - we should get you a minimum of 3 runs in the morning (can't guarantee it because if we have someone go agricultural on the hill the clean up time will hurt us)
People who are keen to maximise their runs up the hill always get more runs in the afternoon for a number of reasons
Main one is - Everyone running in the afternoon has seen how it works in the morning and it runs much smoother
Then add that to
- People do a couple of runs and then think "I have to drive this home" so think maybe a good time to call it quits
- Campers want to pack up ready to leave
- Guest cars run less as they've kinda OD'd in the morning and not paced themselves for the whole day
- The track is normally a little damp and greasy in the morning but dries out during the day - provided the weather stays good it's a quicker run in the afternoon
All those elements drive a little reduction in the group sizes and as a result they spin round faster
So if I was booking a slot it would be afternoon every time if I wanted more runs
The strange thing is Mornings are the favoured slots for most people booking up for the sessions........
Substitutions
We can cope with the odd vehicle change provided the replacement qualifies as retro - it's been done in the past and it's all worked out OK
We'll not accept someone turning up with a 65 plate rental from Hertz and expecting to still go up the hill because their retro car didn't make it - it's a retro show after all
There will be the traditional Saturday late afternoon/early evening sign on process in the paddock for those camping to get cars parked up in the paddock (pole position we call it) - we do hope that not too many LHD cars arrive first (see RRG16 hill feedback and the timing of this ends with the start of any tat auction.
Actually it's worth any prospective new visitors reading that thread above just to understand the evolution of organization of this event - we really do try to make every year better by seeking feedback on how it went - I think in all the years we have been doing this only a very few suggestions in previous feedback years haven't been tried to see if they work or tried and were successful so have been implemented for subsequent years
