Ibis in Stratford might be good? Easy to get a bus or tube to a big Asda store in Leyton, and also to a Tesco in Bow. Stratford is probably the best-connected station in London for transport.

Stay somewhere in central, enjoy the sights and things to see and do, then travel out a few minutes and I'll pick you up and we can go for a matchbox/hotwheels hunt! The selection of Big supermarkets in central London isn't the best. But thee is plenty to do!

Have you tried Tripadvisor? It's generally a fairly reliable way of navigating your way to an acceptable hotel, restaurant or hostelry. Apply filters to find features & prices that suit you; www.tripadvisor.co.uk/e.g. Tune Hotel, Kings Cross£64.00 a night, central. Predominantly good reviews. I don't know if this is more than you'd want to pay, you could get a central hotel room for £50.00 a night but it's going to be in a hotel that's getting a lot of adverse comments about staff attitude, cleanliness, street noise, etc. Also worth trying; www.trivago.co.ukYou'd get a room for £50 a night somewhere like Travelodge Ealing which is close to tube & has very good reviews. Some cheap rooms here; www.lodging-world.com/~

We've stayed at the Kings Cross Premier Inn on York Way before, it's a perfect base as its close to Kings Cross, St Pancras and Euston stations.
Have a good time and don't forget to do a thread. 😉

@automatik
I've got plenty a fleet to choose from, none are fancy but they've got boot space for hotwheels and seats enough for 5.

If you're staying in Stratford and fancy a proper east end local check out the Eleanor Arms www.eleanorarms.co.uk/It's round the corner from my sisters flat, the owner Frankie is a top bloke and did her a most excellent party when she got engaged, real friendly place with loads of kooky art and decent beer.

I live in Finchley, and can honestly say if you want to experience London, that isn't bombardment of Spanish speaking tourists running you over in hordes that resemble a modern zombie film. Id steer clear of North and East London.
South London has a much more friendly and less touristy environment.
Clapham including the common or Brixton is where I would recommend.
If you're looking for some nice places to eat I can point you in the direction of a variation of foods.
Oh and check out spare room.

Those electric milk floats were a common site for me growing up, Co-op Dairy used to deliver our milk on the door step every morning with one. Looks like you did very well with the Matchbox models! 👍🏻

Glad you enjoyed yourselves, shame about the lack of retro cars in London, did you not see any Routemaster buses about? I thought there was a few in use as tour buses still. Good score on the cars, I'm a bit partial to those Matchbox Mercury Commuters myself, I've got quite a few of them. 👍🏻
