Sparko, sell astra buy chevette. sorted. nothing you told me there worried me! or stick with FWD and enjoy the astra on the track. Driving my fiesta hasnt uspet me as much as I thought it might. I actually prefer it to my old 1.8 sapphire, well not the RWD bit but its certainly nippier with more (r)attitude! lol me other ones up in the for sale section I don't want to sell the orange astra because i love it too much but cant afford to insure 2 cars so if i can swap my other astra for a drifter il store the orange one at home and drift about uni ;D

Mk 5 cortinas and capri lasers are still cheap, both are light (about 1000kg depending on the model) and both have easy options for more power, the cheapest bhp per pound at the mo being the 24v.
Both these cars are lighter than stuff half their size these days and are rwd with large engine bays and easy to find spares, I know they are both pretty common in the retro scene, but there are reasons they are popular, a young driver can start with a 1600 (both will drift in the wet with a 1600 in) and add more power as he gets older.
Not the only options obviously but don't overlook them them for more complicated or expensive solutions.

Yes. Having had the dubious honour of coming last in the sprint (although I still reckon I had the slowest car) I am now looking at ways of making my Amazon faster. I know for a saloon car the 121s are not that heavy (between 1025 kg and 1100 kg depending on what source you look at.... far less than a Clio these days... anyone got a weighbridge... I think my car would be the ultimate expression of what PaulH termed as 'significantly lightened' PaulH: (Opens tailgate, holds it for me to appraise weight wise) Feel this, it's been significantly lightened Me: Ah right, you been chopping bits out of the pressing? PaulH (expertly combining a look of incredulity and knowing wisdom): No, it's just really rusty. Me: Oh.) There are many ways to make an Amazon faster, and to make it handle. I have one such solution sitting in my lockup. A B20D engine with D Jetronic and a J type overdrive I have no money to transfer it over and recondition it however. ANd I'm missing quite a few bits necessary to convert a non O \ D car into a O \ D one, namely: 1. Switching solenoid 2. Shorter sectioned prop 3. O \ D light and stalk 4. Lower FD diff. Then the issue of chronic bodyroll which had even Dollywobbler looking on in amusement. IPD sell front and rear anti rear roll bars which may prove a sound investment, along with a set of 20mm lowering springs and a set of Gaz or Bilstein gas dampers. For the meantime I'm going to hot up the B18. Having a fairly poo 36VN Zenith and a very mild cam does not do my power output any favours. I have a set of SU HS6s and a Volvo Sport airbox in my lockup, with the right needles. However, I don't think the manifold is a 4-2-2, rather a 4-2-1 which isn't what I'm after (grr more expense). A Simonz exhaust is also on my list...... As are a set of new tyres to replace the grey 20 year old boots that are on the car at the moment, particularly the undersized 155 \ 80 Barum that led to amusing open diff power dumping at Mallory In an ideal world I'd dump the 4.4 litre Yamaha V8 from the new XC90 under the bonnet (someone's just crashed one near me), mainly because it keeps everything canon, but would be mega expensive because no one's done it before, but 345BHP would be worth it

Do it! Bolt in job! Still regret not buying the lush yellow one I saw for 600 quid! Idiot! Or actually, a TR7 engine would be just as nice and less hassle too.......Easily make 120BHP out of one of those and have a bit more bottom end to 'em

I'm hooked now. I was planning on joining a hill climbing championship next year anyway but the weekend has made me want to get the car sorted sooner. I nearly bought some carbon fibre doors and a bonnet today but I decided I had better get my priorities right first so I am on the hunt for a roll cage next. Lots of plans for the next few months

GREAT THREAD!!!!! Totally feeling the need for speed! The 2.0 pinto aint doing it for me, sooooooo....... .......I am thinking 2.9 24v cosworth and strip the f**ker (pipe dream heaven) BenzBoyIf you are feeling the need for speed and you want it cheap, I can personally recommend a Volvo 480 turbo. - FWD
- 1.7 Turbo
- 120 BHP
- 1019 kg
The engine is a Renault engine with a T2 turbo, they are very tough and torquey. Extra power is easily extracted, a chip and de-cat will see 170 BHP and with a T28 turbo, de-cat, 940 injectors, 3 bar MAP sensor and a chip to suit you will see 200+ BHP. My old 480 was chipped and stripped, it went very well. To put in context it kept up with my mates standard Nissan 200SX S14a which has 200 BHP. The only down side IMO is the fact the handling is not great, but with Koni's and decent tyres it will handle as well as any 80's hatch (bar a 205 GTi)

i can honestly say i felt no need for speed. I'm happy to recline on the bank and watch you guys thrashing the nads off your motors, getting increasingly annoyed with yourselves/ the car. makes for a good days viewing.
