Stage 2 - mostly stripping. Many many layers of paint, it probably cost £100 in paint strippers alone. For those asking which paint strippers they used it was a generic off the shelf stuff but they made careful 'criss-cross' patterns in the paint with a blade so the strippers could 'seep' into the multiple layers, same principle as stripping wall paper really. the can at the rear of the car looks like langlow strip away pro, it is not to be used by novices as its very very strong ! Loving what you are doing here, been watching with interest, will be a very nice car when finished, I have a montana green one that could do with the same treatment

Ah it'll be well spotted, I'll mention the brand to them next I'm up there. I'll send you a goldfish if your right lol. And thanks I'm wishing time away to when this will be ready. Still a long way to go. My parts list include:
- Coilover suspension - Refurbished alloy wheels - TSR exhaust manifold - Trackslag 2.5inch exhaust system - Fully refurbished fuel injection system (k jetronic) - D/S door - Full interior in really good condition.
Phew, next step will be the underneath and plenty of welding no doubt.

This looks great! I had a monza blue Jetta 16v in about 96/97, sold it to by a cosmos blue Scirocco Storm. Wish I still had them both!

I remember an old article back in the day how Gti engineering or maybe Brian Ricketts fitted the alloy 924 or 944 wishbones to a Golf to improve weight rigidity etc. Direct swap I seem to remember. Worth considering.

Thats on a mk1, and its not a direct swap. How many colours had that mk2? I'm dreading attacking the rust on mine,... theres never less than you expect!

Whether you believe you can, or you cannot, you're probably right.

Safe to say there's been several and everyone has been a different colour. Yeah the dreaded ex-metal is a plague. Hope your good with a welder! I wish I was lol the satisfaction of doing a job yourself is never the same as paying someone else to do it. That's just me anyway but this car is way beyond my meagre skills. The next big update is on it's way next week. Basically rust removal and welding. The welding is looking great by the way. However I've been keeping myself busy with part buying. 2 x new outer hubs 2 x new rear discs 2 x g60 calipers (to be refurbished) 2 x g60 hubs 2 x rear carriers New Hella 8v rad 8v rad cowling Refurbished mk3 p/s rack Mk3 p/s lines and associated brackets and pulley. 2 x used mk3 p/s pumps 2 x new front wheel bearings 2 x new rear wheel bearings New 22mm master cylinder 2 x new top mounts 2 x new wishbone repair kit 1 power steering u/j and boot.

It's good to see a very good job being done of fitting the new pieces to your car when it's done like to this standard it's worth paying for.
If it all goes like this you will have a very nice car when it's finished.

Be worth going to polo Gti 6n2 rear stub axles and bearings plus discs. Gets rid of the horrible bearing in disc, which make changing brake discs a doddle.
Just MOT'd my mk2 on Friday, after a full restoration. Took just under 5years.

The standard tapered bearings aren't up to much and I plan on long road trips/track days as well so having that extra strength there will be reassuring. Have you got a thread on here on your build?

It's on Clubgti. Same username. Should be on the 1st page on members motors. The restoration starts maybe 6pages in.

Need to get some better pics, but this is before taking it for the MOT Vey nice GTi 16v. Never had one but always fancied one back in the day. I had a 16v Astra 20 odd years ago when they were fairly new. Christ is it that long ago...! Trying to get a hold of a something reasonable with less than 30 owners these days is a challenge.

I've revised the pictures of today's update so they make more sense chronologically. Might have gone a bit overboard in the amount but hey i like details.

You certainly look to have picked the right place for quality work . It looks like it will need the mearest skim of filler to make that perfect which i gather is what filler was intended for [ some people ' forget']
Nice if you ever sell it as well to have great phots showing the work being done properly !
