Heater matrix blew up on the m6 going to the lakes for a weekend away. It's a common fault for these to fail on mk2's and it did so in spectacular fashion. Going about 80 boiling hot water peppered me and my girlfriend through the vents.
There was a worldwide recall on mk2 golfs becuase of the matrix getting pressurized. The recall included a couple of hoses and a valve to stop it occouring. Worked as a parts manager at a vw dealership in the 1990s and every golf we had in had to be done. Sorry cannot remember the part numbers now.
Might be worth checking with your local dealer or VW to check if the recall was ever done.

Another serial Vw nut here. Doing a ground up,nut n bolt resto with mods on S1 mk1, and my Big bumper mk2 is due for some lovin' soon, including a special 2.0 16v heart and suspension upgrades.

Thanks for the info tigerfox ☺. Wish I knew that. I refitted the matrix not long after it was done with a mk3 one. Also removed the bias valve. I just didn't connect the Coolant hoses back up though. Mis-placed them somewhere 😶. Ah it'd be good to see your golf's tristanh do you have a thread on here? I did have some pictures sent to me today from the restorer via what'sapp, I was quite shocked when I saw them.   So at some point in its poor life it'a been monza blue (original colour and reason I bought it) red, yellow, pink, black. It looks like a Jackson Pollock wannabe owned this in the past. On the upside panels are pretty straight.  |

I guessed as much, you get what you pay for! I'm doing all my own welding etc but maybe next year i want a full paintjob to do it justice. Trouble is theres so many small bodyshops about its hit or miss whether your car will return money well spent and/or be done in a decent timescale

Underside has yet to be stripped back but isn't too bad, welding here and there, panel straightening. I've bought a replacement bonnet too as the underside of the current one is pretty rotten and replacement tailgate as can be seen in pictures. So hopefully autumn  😎   Mostly rust free one dropped off today. For £25, bargain. |

Get plenty pics of the underside restoration.
You taking it back to bare metal underneath too? The underseal is a nightmare to get off :-(

The underseal is a nightmare to get off :-( I'm sure it will be, yes it will be getting stripped back, there's that old saying 'do it once do it right' and if ive gone this far with the body work I might as well go all out. It'll hurt me wallet but Its developing quite a high pain tolerance nowadays haha. |
