Tried to get an insurance quote on a car I'm thinking of buying.
Tried to do it the lazy way, putting the Reg number into a comparison site and although it recognized the number, it came up as a different model.
And not just a variant, it's a Pajero and the site thinks it's a Starion!
The DVLA site lists it as a Pajero on both the MOT and tax sites, so should I be worried or did someone just click the wrong button a few years ago?
And if you can think of a good reason why I should buy a 22MPG 27 year old 4X4, a reason I can use with the girlfiend, I'd be very grateful. At the moment "because it looks really cool and old J 4x4 are hot on the RR board" isn't cutting it!
Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it, I have a Caterham and when I type my reg in with insurance & carparts websites it comes up as a TVR!
All GOV websites are correct so it's clearly the info being shared and incorrectly fed by sausage fingered typists.

I wouldn't growl too hard about 22 mpg out of a Paj. Wait till you're towing a big transporter with a car on it or a double horse box. Then it'll really start to hog the juice. My '90 Falcon (3.9 MPI manual) does around 22 mpg most of the time but I got down to 14 mpg on a long road trip with a cow in the horse box. Does your girlfriend like horses or have any other hobbies requiring a decent tow vehicle? Could you get her interested in old cars? Maybe extol the virtues of the Paj's abilities off-road?

the reg might have a number/letter wrong on the plate?
ive had better mileage out of pajeros than 22mpg.
even if that were the case, i think the savings you make in running costs will offset any mileage issues.
22mpg sounds like someone hasnt even bothered to change the air filter even.
i use to get closer to 30 mpg out of mine on a run of A roads or motorway.

i checked my mot history on a car i bought a couple of months ago and all the details came up fine...
however someone else is trying to check details on the same car today and the .gov database at the dvla doesnt recognise the car at all!
I'm guessing that there is a wide spread issue with wherever it is that farms out all these reg numbers and maybe thats why you paj isnt being recognised?
...and again i just checked the mot history on another car i own and its showing as not recognised too!
just a thought

If I try to search the reg of my Pajero using Mitsubishi as the make, nothing happens. If I put the make as Mitshibishi Pajero, it all works but there's never anything recorded under model.
It's probably just a common issue with imports.

There seem to be a lot of incidents like this with Pajeros (which are, by definition, grey imports) My neighbours Paj has been here since 2001, but when he tried to insure it when he bought it in 2011, the MID insisted it was a Delica! This one is also down on the V5 as Make, Mitsubishi Pajero, model, blank.
In my experience 22mpg is about a normal average for a Paj, at least one with automatic transmission! I've not had a manual one but I believe they are somewhat more frugal!
The only reason you need is "cos I want one" It's your money isn't it?
My long suffering wife lets me buy whatever I like, so long as I don't go into the housekeeping budget to buy it. But then I buy her whatever cars she likes (within reason) under the same constraints. This has resulted in her running a Paj and a Shogun amongst several other things! She only gave up the bruisers cos her back got too bad to climb up into them!
But if you really want some excuses, try the commanding driving position, impact immunity, and the fact that they are brilliant in the snow! Brilliant fun in the snow too, I could handbrake turn my (her) LWB petrol Shogun 180 degrees in its own length and without stopping in the tiny turnaround area at the top of our cul-de-sac with a few of inches of snow down!
