Please tell me about the 1st Gen Mitsubishi Pajero/Shoguns, I'm a 4x4 novice and have the itch!
Looking at a 2.5TD with 230,000 on the clock, what's a good price and where to look for rust?
Thanks

tough as old boots if they have been looked after properly, oil changes ever 4.5k,most important use quality oil too with filter, grease all 12 nipples twice a year, clean air filter evey time you change the oil and change it every 2 or 3 years depending how dusty the conditions are,if used off road in deep water then change the axle oils etc, fuel pumps can develope a leak from inside and only shows underneath the pump, injection pipes where they screw onto pump on mk1 used to have tiny little filters in them many have been removed as its the first place to cause fuel starvation when they block, otherwise just folow best practice to keep the rust at bay they do tend to wear the leaf spring rubbers out,but easy job, torsion bars can get slightly weak but easy to adjust up to compensate, steering boxes can wear, but as worm and peg, easy to tweak, cambelt changes are easy to do,balance belt can snap and take the cambelt out,but motor will run ok withoutbalnce belt on so personal choice there,, ususally the only electrical problems are the glow plug relay, fuel consumption is not the best but it averages around 30,on a manual or at least mine does, engine is a torque monster not bhp, so not a racecar but it will go just about anywhere, basic strong and not much to go wrong!

WHS^^^^^^^^
The 2.5TD IS a bit gutless in LWB form, especially with an autobox behind it. If it has an autobox it will be really thirsty too! And if it does have auto, check carefully the pipes for the oil cooler(s) and make sure they are all connected up, losing one or both coolers will cause the trans to overheat and destroy itself (ask me how I know!) Price wise, expect to pay anything from £500 to £2K for an MOT'd car depending on spec and condition, but a high mile 2.5 should be nearer the low end of that range. If it's a Paj (grey import) the clock may read in kms even if the speedo has been converted to MPH so the mileage may not be so high, still 230K kms is still nearly 150k miles so it's no spring chicken! The engine does have an known appetite for cylinder heads, it's not universal but reasonably common to crack one. Rust wise, check the sills and flitches and all the many body mounting points. Also check the centre of the main rails for cracking. This is oddly more common on later LWB models but does affect a few particularly abused early cars.
And if you pick it up, I have a recon early 2.5 PajII radiator sat here doing nothing you can have for free. And a few other odds and sods.

What about the V6s? Aside from the fuel economy, what are they like to own?

i had a couple 2.5 mk1. i wish i still had..
230 is going to be in Kilometres even if the speedo has been converted into miles
they are slow but can keep up with traffic no problem and will happily sit at 70 when you need it to. the gearboxes take a while to warm up and id have to leave mine for at least 10 minutes before setting off otherwise its like trying to make a dead whale pop to the shops for you..
mechanically they are seriously reliable. 2.5s don't seem to pop head gaskets as readily as the 2.8 though you have to live with a cambelt which never caused me any problems.
if youre buying one, check the chassis legs behind the rear wheels, take big screw driver to it because this is the reason most people bin pajeros and shoguns.
you can pick up a mk1 with an MOT for as little as £600 and there wont be much difference between that and one that you pay a grand for. paying £2000 is a complete waste of money unless its been tricked out.

Thanks everyone, and if I do buy one I'll be in touch stinkynails!
The one I've seen locally, had a Mot fail for chassis rust (now passed) and now seems a bit overpriced. Will have a look at it though.

What about the V6s? Aside from the fuel economy, what are they like to own? I found very little difference in mpg between the '92 2.5TD LWB Paj Auto and the '91 3.0 V6MPi LWB Shogun Auto that followed it. They both did about 22mpg. The Paj was a bit better on local work, the Shogun was more economical on a motorway run. I was going to LPG convert the Shogun, which would have made it the winner by miles but the need to keep 7 seats made it a bit problematic and though I had most bits, I never got around to doing the convo. Performance wise though, the V6 was by far the best, smooth, punchy, towed 2 tonnes without effort and a nice soundtrack too. A friend and neighbour has a SWB 2.8TD Auto PAJ, all tricked out for green laning. That's a terrific piece of kit and goes very well when you stomp on the loud pedal but fuel consumption is abysmal, he reckons it averages 15mpg! The moral here, is that if you don't want to spend ALL your money on fuel, get a manual! I was restricted to auto by my missus being disabled and only having an auto licence, it was technically her car(s)! Steve PS another mate did over 200,000 miles in an LPG converted '92 Shogun V6, aside from burning 1 valve out at 185k, it was utterly reliable, many of those miles were done towing cars on trailers across Europe. His missus put it on it's side one icy morning, he tipped it back on its wheels and kept driving it! A few months later, it was stolen and used on a ram raid in Birmingham. When he got it back, even more battered but still running, the insurance wrote it off but let him keep the salvage. He sold it to a local farmer who only uses it on the farm but, as far as I know, 6 years on, it's still going!
